Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and the Association of Overseas
Chinese Agricultural, Biological and Food Engineers (AOCABFE). The purpose
of this session is to provide a forum for sharing and exchanging visions,
experiences and new ideas for promoting and developing scholarly cooperation
activities between the institutions or individuals in China and in other
countries in the areas of agricultural, biological and food engineering.
ROLE OF AGRICULTURAL AND BIOLOGICAL
ENGINEERING IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY (INTL)-
PANEL DISCUSSION
Tuesday, June 22 – 2:30PM-5:00PM
Location: 327
Moderator: Irfan S. Ahmad, Univ of Illinois
Panelists: Norm Scott, Cornell University; Charles Sukup,
Sukup Manufacturing; and K.C. Ting, University of Illinois
Since the formal inception of the agricultural engineering profession in 1907,
its role has evolved from agricultural machinery design, irrigation and drainage,
rural electrification, and farm structures, to processing, the environment, and
most recently to information-based networked machinery and equipment,
sensors, healthcare, and alternative sources of energy.
The constantly evolving global, social, and technical landscape requires that
engineers adapt rapidly. The role of agricultural and biological engineers
specifically is transitioning, to include newer and wider areas, such as national
security, food safety, public diplomacy, and the challenging ethical, geopolitical,
legal, and economic issues contributing to the multidisciplinary discourse. How
would an agricultural engineer in 2025 look like What sort of skill sets and
leadership skills is the agricultural engineer expected to have How would
agricultural engineers play a meaningful role in a global economy Just like
agricultural mechanization has been a feather in the cap of agricultural
engineers in the 20th century. What is it that will be the distinctive factor for
agricultural engineers in the 21st century What can students, faculty,
administrators, industry and policy makers do to help prepare the next
generation workforce
Who should attend: The discussion on the topic is part of the ongoing effort to
articulate the evolving role of agricultural engineers in global economy, which
started at the 2009 annual meeting. The session at Pittsburg meeting will
continue to discuss some of the questions raised, and will be a focal point for
similar future discussions and forums. Students, postdoctoral associates,
faculty, administrators, industry, and policy makers will potentially gain by
attending. For more information contact: Irfan Ahmad: isahmad@illinois.edu.
