Trees and the Public Realm (Draft)
7 Opportunity Routes
Planting principles
1. Avenues of trees able to grow to become specimens of scale and quality are
acceptable in principle on all routes.
2. Care must be taken to ensure that trees planted on primary roads and bus routes
are located sufficient distance from the kerb to ensure that the incremental growth
and lean of trunks does not present a hazard to the high sides of vehicles over the
expected lifespan of the tree.
3. Where there is sufficient width, boulevards may be created by planting down the
median strip or central reservation
4. Species should be hardy and able to grow to the maximum scale appropriate for
the streets dimensions.
5. Green chains should be maintained with attractive trees that maximise shade
where practical.
