CRITTER NOTES Vet School opens to the public for a behind-the-scenes look University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine is hosting an open house on Saturday, April 16 from 10 am to 4 pm. The public and potential vet school students are encouraged to enjoy tours of the Large and Small Animal Hospitals, and a variety of lectures and presentations. Veterinarians and staff will be available to answer questions. There will be demos by the VETS Emergency Response Team and police department K-9 units. Area rescue groups will showcase adoptable pets. Events for kids are also planned; among them a Teddy Bear Clinic, where children can bring their “broken” stuffed animals for surgery and tender, loving care. Pizza and soft drinks will be sold, with all proceeds benefiting the Class of 2012. The Vet School is located at 2015 SW 16th Ave., Gainesville. Retirement Home for Horses at Mill Creek Farm hosts 3rd Annual Spring Sale The Retirement Home for Horses, a non-profit organization specializing in the safe and gentle care of elderly horses, hosts only one fundraiser a year, the Spring Sale. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, April 9 from 10 am to 3 pm, with 100% of the proceeds going to the care and feeding of the group’s 129 rescued and happily retired horses. Items that can be found at the sale include jewelry, furniture, dvds, children’s items, books, and more. Donations of new or gently-used items can be made to the organization through April 7. Pick-up can be arranged, and all donations are tax-deductible. The Spring Sale is the perfect opportunity to help the organization and visit the horses in their beautiful 200+ acres of pasture. Silent auction and dinner benefits Puppy Hill Farm Puppy Hill Farm Animal Rescue is celebrating 11 years of saving lives with the “For the Love of Animals” Gala. On April 22 from 7-10 pm, the Sweetwater Branch Inn will host a gorgeous gala, featuring food, drinks, music, silent auction, and prize giveaways. Chris Wells will emcee the fundraising event that benefits the non-profit animal rescue organization. Tickets are just $40 per person or $75 per couple. Tables of 8 can be reserved for the discounted rate of $300. The Sweetwater Branch Inn is located at 625 East University Ave. in Gainesville. 5th Annual Mutts and Pups Dog Show spotlights area canines The City of High Springs Farmers Market is hosting the 5 th Annual Mutts and Pups Dog Show on April 16 from 10 am to 2 pm. This year’s event, with Countryside Animal Hospital as “Top Dog” sponsor, will take place under the trees of the new Plantation Oaks Retirement Home facility located at 201 NE 1 st Ave in High Springs. Dogs of any and all breeds are welcome to enter one or more of eight different categories, including Most Unusual, Best Dressed, and Best Kisser, for just $5 per category. Competition is ruff, but adorable enough to make your tail wag! Animal-themed vendors and animal welfare groups will help to make the show fun and educational. Rooterville seeks volunteers to help set up new sanctuary Rooterville, a non-profit animal sanctuary, is relocating to their new property at 5579 Darwood Rd., Melrose. Volunteers are needed to move animals and supplies, and to help with yard work and other tasks. There is plenty of work perfect for college students and the location is not far from campus. Rides can be arranged for groups of 4 or more. There will be two volunteer days in April, on Sundays, April 3 and 10 from 9 am to 12 noon. Phoenix Animal Rescue rallies for strong punishment of dog fighters Phoenix Animal Rescue has organized a rally to take place on Wednesday, April 27 at the Baker County Courthouse in MacClenny, FL to show support and advocate for a strong sentence for two convicted dog fighters. Animal advocates from Gainesville and Jacksonville plan to meet at the courthouse before the hearing. The sentencing is from 2-4 pm, and the group intends to pack the courtroom with animal supporters. The non-profit, pit bull rescue out of Gainesville took possession of, and has already found forever homes for two of the dogs rescued from this fighting bust. Melody and Georgia were confiscated wearing 10-foot long, 40-pound chains that were padlocked on their necks, yet neither dog weighed more than 32 pounds.
