Horses healing humans: The power of Equine Therapy By Valorie Collante Horses have long been thought to have special energy that is conducive to healing. They are extremely sensitive, aware of their surroundings, and generally inquisitive. Using horses for psychotherapy (Equine Assisted Psychotherapy) is a solution-oriented approach to therapy in which horses assist in emotional growth and learning. Equine therapy has been shown to be effective with issues facing people today; such as depression, anxiety, behavioral issues, relationship problems, communication issues, and substance abuse. It has also been shown to relieve symptoms of severe trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Troubled and at-risk adolescents are especially receptive to equine therapy. When regular talk therapy is not getting through, equine therapy may be a more effective way to reach people. Psychotherapists started bringing horses into therapy sessions about 10 years ago; since then this nontraditional approach has gained popularity and become more widely known. It does not require any prior experience with horses. A new type of equine therapy that is interactive and fun treats the entire family. Horses are wonderful role models for families, since they live in family groups and have structured lives not unlike humans. They have a hierarchy in their herd or family and each member is clear about their role and the rules of the family. Family equine therapy provides a powerful opportunity for positive change and helps clients move beyond talking, to experiencing change. The Equine Assisted Family Therapy model was founded by Mental Health counselor Lorisa Lewis of Stable Foundations. The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) is dedicated to improving the mental health of individuals, families, and groups around the world by setting the standard of excellence in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted Learning, also known as "horse therapy" or "equine therapy." EAGALA also trains therapists to incorporate horses into their practice. Equine therapy, which involves clinical professionals, has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of mental health and human development needs. Participants learn about themselves by participating in activities with horses and then discussing feelings, behaviors and patterns. By allowing clients the opportunity to overcome fear and develop confidence, horses provide the means for dealing with intimidating and challenging situations in everyday life.
