Conservation Burial: A new approach to burial for you and your pets By Jessica M. Torrence Environmental consciousness is at an all time high these days. With climate change and the effects of an increasing population affecting the entire world, more and more people are looking for “green” ways to live their lives…and even their afterlives! Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery is operated by Conservation Burial, Inc. (CBI), a non-profit, 501(c) 13 organization. The mission of CBI is to promote natural burial practices in cemeteries that conserve land and reunite people with the environment. CBI provides a natural burial choice that conserves land while protecting the environment and water quality. Burial service fees are committed to land acquisition, protection, restoration, and management. Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery is a natural burial ground within a protected conservation area, located in southern Alachua County. The cemetery is peaceful and well-maintained, designed to meet the needs of each family and to commemorate the lives of those buried on the grounds. Imagine visiting a cemetery in a natural landscape, with trails and wildlife and night-time stargazing. The surrounding property is a natural mix of open grassy areas, hardwoods, and wetlands. There is a growing trend among animal lovers to have not only a final resting place for their pets, but also the option to repose with their companion animals. For a reasonable burial fee, humans and pets up to 150 pounds can have their final resting place at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery. This pet burial option is especially beneficial for those who live in apartments or housing without property. As a non-profit organization, CBI offers the most considerate care for the passing of a loved one. Many options for burial are available, so long as items used for the burial are biodegradable; for example, natural fiber burial shrouds or wood caskets. Upon request, CBI will make referrals to companies providing these goods. Burial services can be any length of time and the land can be utilized for viewing or other ceremonial purposes, carrying out religious or personal traditions, etc., at no additional charge. Space for the burial or scattering of cremains is also available. Each gravesite is marked by the cemetery with a small bronze marker placed in the center of each grave, with the name and date of the loved one resting there. Pets and humans can rest together, a very important step in affirming the human/animal bond . Visitors stroll the grounds of Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery For human burials, the Final Burial Wishes form can be downloaded from the CBI website. This document acts as a planning tool for individuals and CBI in that it allows people to share their final burial wishes with their loved ones as well as provide CBI the information it needs to control the availability of future gravesite space. Burial sites at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery can not be purchased in advance; therefore dedicated burial funds can remain in the individual’s control until absolutely necessary. For those who are environmentally conscious and are considering Conservation Burial, CBI encourages phone calls to request additional information and to discuss any wishes with the organization. CBI wants to help make this a meaningful experience for family and friends. Visits to the Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery during any daylight hours are allowed, but since the cemetery has just opened and does not have a completed entrance, initial visits are by appointment only.
