Rowing
Last Saturday, the 5 th November, KWS sent a
team of 85 to participate at the Loreto
Normanhurst Regatta at the Sydney
International Regatta Centre at Penrith. There were a good range of events available
for the girls and boys. The programme mainly followed the Girls Head of the River
format interspersed with boys’ races, following the sequence of events followed at the
GPS Boys Head of the River programme with some additional Quad Scull events. In
attendance were most of the major boys and girls schools in the State.
The day for KWS opened with the Year 9 Girls Quad Scull Divisions, with all crews
being competitive in very strong fields. The three Years 7 beginner Quads racing
against older opponents in their first regatta produced two second places and one third
place between them. The Year 8 girls racing in the higher Divisions of this same event
gained second and fourth places with good performances as well. The beginner Boys
Quads then raced in the Year 8 boy’s events to manage very pleasing second and
fourth placings in their events on their first outings as well.
In the Year 10 Girls Double Scull events, Nevena Kosarac and Georgina Uttley scored
a win, while Nicola Thomas and Carmen Date, and Sophie MacSmith and Prue
Eccleston both obtained third placings in their respective Divisions. In the year 10
Single Scull events both Madeline Hawthorne and Georgia McKenzie were placed third
in their Divisions.
In the year 9 Boys Quad Scull races, the two KWS crews were placed fourth and sixth
respectively in their Division with sound rows. Molly McLaughlin and Beatrice
Patterson also performed well in securing a fourth place in the Schoolgirls Double Scull.
In the Schoolgirls Single Scull events Annelise Corey rowed superbly to win her
Division very comfortably. Then the KWS crews in the Schoolgirl Year 10 Quad
rowed strongly in what was a second race for most of them to obtain pleasing fourth
places in their Divisions.
The Year 10 boys then stepped up in their Quad race to record a most convincing win
with the second somewhat makeshift crew also recording a pleasing fourth. The three KWS crews
entered in the Schoolgirl Year 9 Double Scull, all rowed well with the best result being a good third by
Meghan Forsyth and Sophie Aylward in their Division.
The senior crews then raced twice in their events once before, and once after lunch.
In the Schoolboy Coxed Quad Scull the KWS number one crew, stroked by Eden Taylorwood-Roe, won
decisively in their race before lunch and were narrowly beaten into second place by Newcastle Grammar
after lunch. The second KWS crew in this event, rowed soundly for fourth place before lunch and third
afterwards. In the Schoolgirls Quad events, the two KWS entries obtained third and fourth places in their
respective Divisions before lunch and repeated this performance afterwards.
The KWS Senior Four raced in the School First Four events, being narrowly defeated by Kings in the race
before lunch and then coming out after lunch to decisively win against a field containing nearly all the major
GPS schools in a most pleasing display.
The Kinross Wolaroi School rowing team finished the day with five wins, seven seconds and nine third
places. Given the quality of the participating Schools, this was a very pleasing outcome - the best overall
performance by the KWS team at this regatta. As always, parental support for the event enabled the day
and its organisation to flow freely, pleasantly and successfully.
