Alumni 2013 Wolaroi: Across the years Leadership narrows the age barrier Vaughn Higgins, a Year 11 boarder from Griffith, is the Head Boy Prefect at KWS for 2014. Over the holiday break Vaughn met and chatted with local Griffith resident and former Head Boy Prefect of Wolaroi College, Jack Vearing. Jack was Head Boy and a Wolaroi boarder in 1953. Jack is formally of Rankins Springs. Vaughn spent two hours with Jack and they discussed old times and current events. Jack was able to provide Vaughn with some advice from his vast inside knowledge of what went on in his year as leader in the fifties. Jack was impressed by Vaughn’s vision and with how much the school had progressed over the past sixty years. Jack is planning a visit to KWS in the near future, with Vaughn keen to show him the boarding house, his old dormitory and the stunning new buildings and myriad of opportunities available to the students of this decade. Paul becomes legend amongst current students Dr Paul O’Keeffe (‘57), became well known to the students this year … and they haven’t even met him! During a visit to Sydney earlier this year, Director of Development Paul Tierney visited Dr Paul at his surgery in Manly. Tall tales of the good times were regaled over a meal and Dr Paul mentioned the times he had spent ‘on the Wolaroi roof’. The story sounded a little far-fetched, and so to prove it, Dr Paul sent though some photos of his adventures during his time at Wolaroi, one of which showed him perched high up on the roof of Wolaroi mansion! During a presentation to the senior assembly on school history and archival material, the photo shown here was displayed to the student body on the giant screens in the Derek Pigot Auditorium. Whilst consequences (via safety and punishment) may be dire if the stunt were to be replicated now, credibility was forever gained and Dr Paul will live long in the minds of the Wolaroi boys, as the time approaches to say farewell to Wolaroi mansion as a boarding house. 4
Alumni 2013 PLC/Kinross: reunions The ‘Sixties Chicks’ reunion gets stronger A fabulous reunion for PLC Ex-students from the 1960s had its second coming together in March this year. Ladies from any year of that decade are encouraged to make their way to Katoomba for a relaxed weekend each year. The Blue Mountains Music Festival provides the backdrop for the weekend and allows attendees to slip in and out of music events and reunion activities. Whilst this reunion concept is still in its early days, Janelle Newberry (‘68) and the other ladies were thrilled to come together in this way. The PLC exstudents mixed over meals, coffee and musical performances, with partners, children and extras also enjoying the weekend entertainment. A special mention goes to Sue (Barnett) Hudson, (‘69), who travelled from Armidale to see one of her musical idols, legendary folk singer Arlo Guthrie perform. She was thrilled to find him sitting outside the restaurant she was dining in and managed to get a photo and have a chat! Janelle hopes this report encourages others from any year group of the 60s to join them in March next year. As PLC became Kinross, and with both Wolaroi and Kinross becoming co-educational, the future paths of both schools were uncertain at this time. 2013 sees the 40th year celebrations for graduates of this era, and some serious ‘digging’ has occurred to reconnect with the PLC/Kinross students of the day. Class Advocate Belinda (Wansey) Barrett has been instrumental in tracking down the whereabouts of most of her classmates. Belinda has also gone to great lengths to contact those who were part of this ‘cohort’ but left in 1971 after Year 10. The reunion in September will be the first time in a while that these students have been together, and whilst they were a small cohort their importance to the history of the School is invaluable. 5
