How to get Started
with a Peer Counselor
Our peer counselors are a lot
like you. They are mothers
and have successfully breastfed
at least one child. Peers
are enthusiastic about breastfeeding
and about helping
other mothers have a positive
breastfeeding experience.
A Peer Counselor has had
special breastfeeding
training, her job is to help
you reach your breastfeeding
goals.
She is available to you to
answer questions and
provide support and
encouragement.
Many expecting mothers have heard
that breastfeeding is best, but still
have questions before making the
decision on how to feed their baby. A
Peer Counselor is a wonderful person
to answer these questions! She will
contact you monthly during your
pregnancy, and more often as your
due date gets closer.
Peer Counselors help new mothers by
providing support and answering their
questions. They are trained to help
you work through problems and can
refer you to a lactation counselor if
needed. She will check in on you as
often as you like, and you will be able
to call her as well.
A Peer Counselor is available to you
beyond typical business hours, even
evenings and weekends!
When needed, a Peer Counselor can
come to the hospital, meet you at the
WIC clinic, or come to your home for
a visit.
At your WIC appointment
the Nutrition Educator may
suggest a Breastfeeding Peer
Counselor. If you would like
one she will send a referral.
You may also call the local
WIC office to sign up.
