CHEERLEADERS GO TO STATE...The cheerleaders
began working on their competition routine in early November.
They practiced 4 or 5 times per week trying to perfect their stunting,
tumbling, cheer, and dance skills. The team competed in four
invitationals leading up to the State series. These invitationals gave
them feedback to improve their routine and see how they we measured
up against other teams. The group cheered on the sidelines of the
boys’ and girls’ basketball games. This was another opportunity to
practice their skills in front of a crowd and see how the stunts looked
under pressure. After many changes and a lot of hard work, the team
was ready to compete in the sectional competition. The Rolling
Meadows Large Varsity Sectional consisted of 15 teams. The Hersey
team felt good about their performance but was nervous because
the competition was tough. Then, during the awards ceremony, the
Principal's Message...
Dear Hersey Parents,
It’s difficult to believe that we’re in the middle of winter when it’s 42
degrees outside. Although we haven’t had any snow days (and not
much snow, for that matter), winter at Hersey is alive and well. We
finished the first semester, and now our freshmen feel like veterans
on campus. At the other end of the spectrum, seniors have heard or
are awaiting notification of where their futures will take them. Many
of our seniors have received college letter of acceptance, with more
on the way every day. This is also scholarship season, and I cannot
encourage you enough to monitor the available scholarships to see if
they are appropriate for your senior.
The Theatre Department has been extremely busy. First, the show “Little Women,” was selected
to be performed at the Illinois Theatre Festival which took place in January at Illinois State
University. The show was spectacular, receiving a standing ovation. Then last week, the winter
play, New York, was produced. The show was thought provoking and sent an important
message to all who came to see it. The casting for the spring musical, “Evita,” has taken place
and rehearsals have begun.
Teams deserve special recognition. The speech team is having an exciting season. Four events
qualified for sectionals at Hoffman Estates: Rachel Campbell (Oratorical Declamation), Aremi
Arroyo (Poetry), Claire O’Donnell (Special Occasion) and Andrew Napora (Radio). Claire and
Andrew were both Regional Champions. Our Debate Team has done an extraordinary job.
Please read article on page 9. DECA has also distguished itself. See article, page 6 for specifics.
As you can tell by the cover of this newsletter, the Hersey Cheer Squad made it to the state
competition. What an accomplishment for all the talented cheerleaders. This is a first for Hersey.
All the hard work certainly paid off!!
Trish Moore, health teacher, has been named as assistant coach of the year from Illinois High
School Track Coaches’ Association.. If you know Mrs. Moore, you’ll understand why she was
selected for this honor.
Individual students have also been recognized for some amazing accomplishments. Nora
Gawlik was honored by receiving the Rising Star Award at the Mt. Prospect Celestial
Celebration. This award goes to a student who steps outside of the norm and sets an example
for others through volunteerism and demonstrating leadership. Moriah Mulroe was chosen to
serve on the Daily Herald Leadership Team, with Austin Menzia receiving honorable mention.
Both students excelled in volunteerism and community service. Cassidy Muir has received
recognition for the prestigious Prudential Spirit of Community Award (see page 17). Grace Petit
was named outstanding soloist in the Ft. Atkinson Show Choir competition.

Named as one of the recipients of the Prudential Spirit of the Community award, Cassidy Muir
was not only named as a distinguished finalist for aiding, but due to the hours she gave, she was
also named as a special volunteer. She will be receiving a bronze medal and has already received
a letter from President Obama, commending her for her work. Cassidy’s project included
raising $5000 to fund service trips to Kenya, Angola, Haiti and El Salvador. She also collected
and distributed school supplies, clothing, toys, land helped build homes for the homeless, and
designed water filters to provide clean, drinkable water.
Our student of the month program continues. November’s recipient was Bryan Vazquez
for outstanding work in biology. The December student, Callie Joncas, was named for her
contribution to her physical education class. January recognized Heather Dicharia for her
contributions in Amerian Literature and U.S. History classes. Read more about these three
students’ accomplishments on page 8 and 9 in this newsletter.
Second semester means that soon we will be in testing season. First the ACT, then all the
Advanced Placement exams. By now, students have registered for classes next year. Thank you
for all your support and continued encouragement to our students.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tina Cantrell
HOLIDAY SHOP
WITH A COP!
With the generosity of Target, a lucky bunch of
kids from Arlington Heights School District 25 got
to “Shop With A Cop” at the Arlington Heights
Target Store. With Pete Hamrick, Hersey’s
School Resource Officer, and other Arlington
Heights Police Officers in the lead pushing
the shopping carts, the kids went Christmas
shopping. With guidance from Margie Picardo
and her fellow Target employees, and with support from the Arlington Heights Citizen Policy
Academy Alumni Association and the Hersey High School Girls’ Freshmen AB Basketball Teams,
the kids were able to complete their Christmas shopping. It’s not sure who had the best time,
but, rest assured, a great time was had by all!
This was the seventh year Target and FOP Lodge 80 have held the event. Hersey High School
students have participated in this event since its origin. This was the largest group of students to
date. The JHHS students helped with shopping and wrapping the gifts.
Bryan Vazquez
Congratulations to Bryan Vasquez, Hersey's Student of the Month
for November! Nominating teacher Steve Messer reports Bryan is
the perfect Student of the Month because of his exceptional work
ethic and high achievement in Biology. He is a model student who
always puts forth his best effort and is willing to help out his peers.
Bryan enjoys working with cars, and is interested in pursuing a
career in automotives. He advises future Hersey students to “do as
much as you can do.”
Callie Joncas
Congratulations to Callie Joncas, Hersey's Student of the Month for December!
Nominated by P.E. teacher Mr. Lussow, Callie’s outstanding work ethic and
participation are what have accounted for her nomination. Mr. Lussow commented,
“Callie goes above and beyond the call of duty every day. She has accepted every
challenge of my grueling workouts with tenacity and pride. She displays a
willingness to work regardless of the amount of effort involved. She never gives up
and always strives to improve her fitness level every day. She begins the class and
ends the class with a smile. Callie is also on the girls’ cross country and track
teams. Upon high school graduation, she plans on to attend college and obtain a
degree in the science field. Callie advises future Hersey students to “be
adventurous and try new things, but stay balanced.”
Practice ACT for all Juniors
All juniors enrolled in Illinois public high schools are required to participate in
the ACT and WorkKeys testing program, known collectively as the Prairie State
Achievement Examination (PSAE), on April 25 and 26, 2012. Whether students
are considering attending a four-year university, a community college, entering a
vocational training program, work force or the military, these tests will play a key
role in determining the choices available to them.
John Hersey High School is committed to helping students fulfill their highest
academic potential during high school and in their post-secondary experiences.
As part of this commitment, we are providing all juniors with the opportunity to
take a practice ACT test on Wednesday, March 21, beginning at 7:30 a.m. This free
practice test will be administered in the Carter Gym at John Hersey High School.
From 7:30 a.m. until 11:50 a.m., students will take a complete ACT, including the
writing test, in conditions similar to those they will experience in April on the
state required test date. After lunch, students will meet with their counselor and
complete the registration materials for the PSAE. Since this testing will take the
entire day, there will be no regularly scheduled classes for juniors on March 21.
After the tests are scored, each student will receive a copy of his/her test result.
We will also conduct test preparation activities in classes during the week prior to
the PSAE state testing in order to ensure each student’s maximum performance.
Reviews will be based on the March 21 test results.
It is essential that all juniors report to the Carter Gym promptly by the regular
start time of 7:30 a.m. Juniors should bring several sharpened #2 pencils (no
mechanical pencils) and a calculator to the practice test.
I am confident that you will support our efforts to help in making this day
meaningful for your student. Doing well on the PSAE will not only help students
make wise post-secondary choices, but the results will also help in senior
placement decisions. Please encourage your student to be well rested and to eat a
nourishing breakfast before the practice test, and make sure s/he arrives at school
on time. This opportunity will reap tremendous rewards for all our juniors.
Graduation Information
Graduation Tickets...
It’s not too early to start thinking about the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2012. This
year’s Commencement will take place on Sunday, June 3, at 12:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.
As has been our policy, EACH SENIOR FAMILY WILL BE GIVEN FOUR TICKETS TO
GRADUATION. Extra tickets will be available on a very limited basis. IN MOST CASES, NO
FAMILY WILL RECEIVE MORE THAN 6 TICKETS. The number of tickets you receive will
depend upon the number of requests for extra tickets. We cannot guarantee the number of tickets
you request. However, we will have additional tickets for those who would like to view the
ceremony via closed circuit TV in the theater.
In order to facilitate the needs of families, we are trying to do the ticket allocation early this year.
Therefore, if you are going to request extra tickets, please have your son or daughter sign up in
the Main Office from Monday, March 5, through Friday, March 16. PLEASE DO NOT CALL TO
SIGN UP FOR EXTRA TICKETS. You must have someone come in to the Hersey Main Office to
sign up.
Extra tickets will be allocated in an equitable manner, not on a first-come/first-served basis, so it
does not matter when you sign up during this two-week period.
A list of the ticket allocation will be posted in the Main Office by WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4.
We believe this will allow you enough time to make arrangements with family and guests for
graduation. THE ACTUAL TICKETS WILL NOT BE DISTRIBUTED UNTIL GRADUATION
PRACTICE ON FRIDAY, JUNE 1. You are, however, guaranteed to receive the number of tickets
that will be posted. We ask that you wait to make plans until this list comes out so that you know
how many tickets you are going to receive.
Auditions for graduation performances (speeches, songs, poems, etc.) will be held on Tuesday,
April 10 and Wednesday, April 11. Students wishing to audition need to sign up in the Main
Office the same dates as sign-ups for tickets. Students should come to auditions with a finished
product.
Please watch future newsletters for more graduation information. If you have any questions, you
may call the Assistant Principal for Student Activities, John Novak, at 718-4818.
Hersey Students place nationally in US Cyber Challenge.
This past fall District 214 had over 30 students participate in the US Cyber Challenge. This new nationally
based competition is web based, involving Network Fundamentals, Operating Systems and System
Administration. Nate Gramer of John Hersey High School was recognized as a state champion in the
competition. Nate won a $250 VISA card as the State Champion.
Students were given access to web based curriculum which uses youtube videos and other web based
curricula to introduce students to Networking concepts, Windows, Linux and Unix operating systems and
programming languages like PERL, JAVA and GNU BASH. The goal of the competition is to expose
students to the tools needed to become a Network Security Specialist. Instructors in the Computer Repair
and Cisco Networking programs worked through the material, attempting to fit lessons and material into
their regular computer curriculum.
The US Cyber Foundations Competition is the entry-level competition in a series of increasingly challenging
contests sponsored by U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC). USCC was chartered to identify and nurture
America’s best and brightest who can become the future cyber policy leaders, cyber guardians and cyber
warriors for United States companies, government agencies, and military services.
College news for parents of juniors:
In late February or early March, all juniors will meet with the college counselor in classroom sessions. Students will learn about
standardized testing, college selectivity, college search resources and how to finalize their list of colleges. Parents can encourage
their student’s college search by talking about what college traits are important to them, taking them on college visits, and
accompanying them to upcoming D214 evening programs specifically designed to guide your family through the college selection
process. These programs are listed below:
March 6 th at 7 p.m., “Ask the College Night”, Forest View Educational Center Theatre.
Kick off the college search by learning about different types of colleges: local community college, out-of-state
community colleges, in-state public universities, out-of-state universities, and private universities. Join us for
a lively panel discussion about the differences and advantages of each type of school in terms of academic
programs, student life, application procedures and financial aid.
March 13 at 7 p.m., Junior Financial Aid Night, Forest View Educational Center Theatre.
Demystify the financial aid process by learning how the financial aid process works, how to estimate the financial
aid that will be available to your family, and how to identify colleges that could be a financial fit for your family.
March 21, 2012 at 7 p.m., Specialized College Options, Starting in the Forest View Educational Center Theatre.
Spend the evening gathering in-depth information on specialized college programs: liberal arts, performing arts,
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math), selective colleges or Canadian universities. Select two of the
five 40-minute breakout sessions to learn more about the academic programs, career opportunities, educational
advantages, and admissions requirements at these specialized college options.
April 3, 2012 from 6 to 8:30 p.m., District 214 College Night, Harper College Wellness and Sports Center.
The District 214 College Night is one of the largest college fairs in the area. Admission representatives from 200
different colleges from across the country are all gathered in one location to answer your questions about course
offerings, college life, admission and financial aid. Get the information you need about colleges of interest.
Two additional college planning resources for junior families include our JHHS college planning guide and our counseling staff.
Our planning guide, What’s next Planning for Life After High School, will be mailed to your family in April. Additionally, you
can make individual appointments with your student’s counselor or the College Counselor for assistance in identifying possible
colleges. Please call ahead for an appointment. In the meantime, feel free to call us with any questions or concerns about the
college search.
2012 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS
Cassidy Muir, a senior at John Hersey High School, was named a Distinguished Finalist for the
2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in Illinois. This award represents the United States’
largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. All public and private middle
and high schools in the country, as well as all Girl Scout councils, 4-H organizations, American
Red Cross Chapters, YMCAs and affiliates of HandsOn Network, were eligible to select a student
or member for a local Prudential Community of Spirit Award. More than 5,000 local honorees
were reviewed by an independent panel, which selected two honorees and eight istinguished
finalists for Illinois.
Muir was chosen for her service to impoverished areas around the world. “I’ve been given
so much,” she states, “it seems wrong not to give something back.” She first discovered her
desire to help those less fortunate in 2005. As a sixth grader she travelled to Angola with Rise
International, an organization that partners with Angolan churches, community leaders and
government officials to build primary schools in rural Angola. While there, she visited villages and
immediately wanted to help equalize their opportunities.
She realized, “The people there are exactly the same as us, but were born under different
circumstances. Any effort to improve their possibilities in this world is an effort worth making.”
Since then, Muir has used summer vacations as a chance to travel to needy nations and do what
she could to help the less fortunate. In 2009 and 2010, she joined Oasis for Orphans, whose
mission is to care for the orphans of the Trans Mara region of Kenya, helping to build water filters
to provide drinkable water for people of Kenya. While there, she worked with children, teaching
them about personal hygiene and other medical issues.
Also in 2010, she travelled to the Petit-Goave area of Haiti, one of the hardest hit by the
earthquake, to help rebuild schools, serve food, and distribute other daily necessities.
At Hersey, Muir’s desire to assist people of the world doesn’t stop. As a member of Ubuntu,
she has raised awareness and funds for Invisible Children, an organization whose mission is to
stop the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) terrorist organization, participated in The International
Justice Mission’s “Loose Change to Loosen Chains,” to help rescue to victims of slavery, sexual
exploitation and other forms of violent oppression, and joined The Water Project, a charity
dedicated to helping provide clean, safe water to those who suffer needlessly without it.
Why does she do it “It makes me happy; I have only one life, I might as well do something
important with it.”
Hersey Teacher
Finalist for
Special Olympics
North American
Coach of the Year
Award
John Hersey High School teacher, Craig Ameel, was recently named one of four finalists for the Special
Olympics North American Coach of the Year. Ameel, a 33 year veteran of teaching, began coaching
Special Olympics 27 years ago because he, “wanted to give my special students a chance to get involved
in sports, like every other high school student can do.”
There were sixteen coaches from across the United States nominated for Special Olympics Coach of the
Year, of which four were chosen as finalists. Ameel was selected as a finalist for the breadth and duration
of his service to Special Olympics.
During a typical school year, Ameel coaches 7 Special Olympic sports including volleyball, floor hockey,
basketball, and cross country skiing. His teams participate in area, district, and state competitions where
they have won 38 team and hundreds of individual State Championship Gold Medals. He has also
coached at the international level including the World Games in 1999 (North Carolina), 2007 (Shanghai,
China), and 2011 (Athens, Greece). He served as the Illinois Head Track Coach for the National Games
in 2006 (Iowa) and 2010 (Nebraska).
For Ameel, the reward for the hours and hard work, “is seeing the individual growth that the
athletes have as people and as competitors. It’s great to see an individual become a contributing
team member - sharing - interacting - all those things add up to make a person more social and
more independent.” And, Ameel’s influence doesn’t end on the athletic field. He has had three Global
Messengers (students trained to give speeches to groups about the benefits of Special Olympics)
come out of the program, and six of his former Partners’ Club members (mainstream students
who volunteer to help the team) have become special education teachers or work in a related
field like occupational therapy.
“I continue to coach because it is an amazing experience every time we practice, compete, and
participate in other Special Olympics events. The opportunity for the athletes to be involved is
vital, and really, life-changing for them. It certainly has changed my life.”
Texting While Driving: A Dangerous Combination
The popularity of text messaging and other mobile communications have grown substantially in
recent years, especially among teens. In 2010, U.S. teens sent or received an average of 3,339
texts each month. While texting is a great way to stay in touch, it is a dangerous distraction when
done behind the wheel. This is especially true for young drivers who are still developing safe
driving skills and thus need to limit unnecessary risks.
Students at John Hersey High School recently participated in an interactive lesson about the
risks of texting and driving. Using AAA’s state of the art driving simulator, the Arlington Heights
Police Department and the Hersey Driver Education Department helped students understand how
distractions like texting can affect their ability to safely drive. Several student volunteers were
asked to navigate a virtual driving course while reading and typing a series of text messages.
None were able to complete the course without having their driving skills significantly impaired by
the distraction of texting. This experience should serve as a vivid reminder for students to stay
focused and distraction free when they get behind the wheel in real life.
Texting while driving for all drivers is banned by state law and the Arlington Heights Police
Department has made enforcement a major priority. AAA encourages parents to have a
discussion with their teens – whether they have their license or not – and make it clear that texting
while driving is not acceptable. Parents of teen drivers can make this part of their Parent-Teen
Driving Contract, and enforce their own penalties for violating this rule. More information on
Parent-Teen Driving Contracts and other teen driving topics can be found at. www.TeenDriving.
[1] Your game card is randomly assigned 8 teams (2 teams from each
region) that will play in college basketball's national championship
tournament in March. The teams are represented by their seed numbers
and regions in the tournament. [2] At the end of the tournament, prizes are
awarded to the 45 game cards whose teams score the most combined total
points throughout the tournament, and the 4 cards that score the fewest
total combined points. See the front of this card for prize details and the
breakdown of Grand Prizes and Runner-Up Prizes. [3] Teams that have been
eliminated from the tournament get zero points in rounds they do not play.
[4] If two or more game cards are tied with the same score, the total
combined free throws made by all teams on the card is used as the primary
tiebreaker. See website for complete tiebreaker rules. [5] Minimum odds of
winning: 1 in 29 per card. [6] No purchase necessary to play. Void where
prohibited. [7] Sweepstakes ends on 4/2/2012. [8] To enter, the
organization on the front of this game card must activate the card number.
To request a free game card, ask the organization in person (see contact
info on front) for a “free game card request form”, complete the form, and
mail to the address shown on the request form along with a self-addressed
stamped envelope postmarked by 3/14/2012. A game card will be
assigned to you and mailed in the return envelope sent with your form. [9]
See website for additional details and to view winning game cards.
