British Sign Language: a modern <strong>for</strong>eign language<br />

Date: 9 September 2008<br />

Location: University of Central Lancashire, Preston<br />

This workshop will draw upon a UCLAN project that aims<br />

to establish a new online curriculum <strong>for</strong> the teaching of<br />

British Sign Language (BSL) at HE level (there is currently<br />

no st<strong>and</strong>ardised curriculum <strong>for</strong> BSL in HE). Participants will<br />

see a demonstration of the on-line curriculum <strong>and</strong> be able<br />

to discuss issues surrounding BSL.<br />

6 Ps in Podcast: Planning, Production, Pedagogy<br />

Participation, Positioning, Publishing<br />

Date: 11 September 2008<br />

Location: King’s College London<br />

This workshop will introduce the basic software required<br />

to make a pedagogical audio file. In addition to h<strong>and</strong>s-on<br />

experience, the seminar sessions will involve input based on<br />

the 6 Ps Portsmouth model <strong>and</strong> discussion relating to the<br />

implications <strong>for</strong> the teacher of moving to an online/blended<br />

learning environment.<br />

<strong>Languages</strong> of the wider world: valuing diversity<br />

Location: School of Oriental <strong>and</strong> African Studies (SOAS),<br />

London<br />

This conference will bring together teachers, researchers,<br />

educational developers <strong>and</strong> policy makers to discuss<br />

practical <strong>and</strong> strategic issues relating to languages of the<br />

wider world in UK higher education.The aim is to showcase<br />

work being undertaken <strong>and</strong> to facilitate collaboration, raise<br />

the profile, <strong>and</strong> make the case <strong>for</strong> increased HE provision<br />

of “less widely used <strong>and</strong> lesser taught” languages.<br />

Embedding online learning in current teaching practice<br />

Location:The Open University, Milton Keynes<br />

This workshop will introduce Modern <strong>Languages</strong> teaching<br />

staff to current practices <strong>and</strong> national initiatives related to<br />

the integration of online learning with a face-to-face<br />

teaching setting.The workshop will be delivered in a<br />

blended fashion, with pre- <strong>and</strong> post-workshop activities<br />

taking place online using tools <strong>and</strong> resources openly<br />

available to educators in the HE sector.<br />

Enquiry-based learning in languages<br />

This conference will explore the role of Enquiry-Based<br />

Learning (EBL) in language learning <strong>and</strong> teaching. EBL has<br />

been growing steadily across all sectors as a way to<br />

enhance students’ independent learning, encourage<br />

intellectual curiosity, develop valuable transferable skills <strong>and</strong><br />

increase overall motivation.<br />

Teaching medieval <strong>and</strong> early-modern culture to students<br />

of modern languages<br />

This workshop aims to support the teaching of medieval<br />

<strong>and</strong> early-modern culture in modern languages - an area<br />

which is often felt to be in decline.The workshop starts<br />

from the premise that the study of medieval <strong>and</strong> earlymodern<br />

culture is pedagogically important <strong>and</strong> intellectually<br />

valuable.The workshop will identify practical ways in which<br />

we can engage <strong>and</strong> inspire students in this field.<br />

e-Learning symposium<br />

Date: January 2009<br />

Location: University of Southampton<br />

The fourth e-learning symposium organised by <strong>LLAS</strong> will<br />

bring together practitioners from a wide range of<br />

disciplines <strong>and</strong> institutions.We are looking <strong>for</strong> examples of<br />

e-Assessment in language teaching to help in<strong>for</strong>m this<br />

symposium, <strong>and</strong> are interested in anything from high stakes<br />

testing, to low stakes in<strong>for</strong>mal online assessment that you<br />

might use during your course.<br />
