ROCK n ROLL with
BOPPIN DARRIN
November already!! Soon be Christmas,
most of the shops are decorated
up and tickets for Christmas and New
Year parties are going quick, so don’t
get left out in the cold, get your tickets
for some great nights out, meanwhile
this month keep happy and warm but
most of all have fun.
One of the great pioneers of rock n roll
was of course, and still is, Jerry Lee
Lewis, some know him as “The Killer”.
Born in Louisiana 29th September 1935,
he grew up listening to a variety of music
from Boogie, Country, Blues and
Gospel which all had an impact on him,
so much so that he seemed to put them
all into a bag, give it a good shake then
what came out was the Jerry Lee Lewis
sound. Jerry was just 8 years old when
his parents went into debt to buy him a
Stark upright piano, well there was no
face book or PS3’s in them days!! Jerry
spent most of his time playing the piano,
it wasn’t long before he had mastered
it, and what a talent he had. Jerry
see’s it as his gift from God. It was 1956
Jerry took his talent to Memphis after
reading a story about Elvis’s road to
stardom, once Sam Phillips had heard
him play that was it, tapes turned into
records, records being turned into
cash, it was 1957 when the killer’s first
track hit the charts “Whole Lotta Shakin”
soon backed up by “Great Balls of
Fire” another hit record, now touring
and becoming one of the biggest stars,
another track release “Breathless”
nothing could go wrong for him on tour
NOVEMBER ‘10 3
to Britain. Jerry Lee Lewis heading to be
a top rock n roll star, then the British
press found out “Jerry Lee Lewis married
to his 13 year old cousin.” The tour
got cancelled and from getting £10,000
a night he went back to £250 a night if
he was lucky....
Still driving along the rocky road, 1961
saw him starting to get some hits again,
not top 10 hits but good enough to get
into the charts, he carried on rockin and
is still rockin somewhere today with his
piano..... Jerry Lee Lewis once said
“When they look back on me I want
them to remember me, not for my wife’s,
although I’ve had a few, and certainly
not for any mansion or high living, money
I made and spent, I want them to
remember me simply for my music”
Keep rockin Jerry Lee Lewis..............
This month at The Watchfield Inn,
Watchfield, Highbridge TA9 4RD we
have got ‘Pete Hutton and the Beyonders’
STOLEN GOODS
Musician and folk artist ‘Miranda Sykes’ has
had some equipment stolen from her car
outside her house in early October, it might
not sound much but all together including
cases and cables it comes to about £3000
worth:
* Gallien Krueger Bass Amp in a mauve
flight case.
* Orchid Acoustic Pre-amp - these are
pretty rare
* Shure E5 in-ear monitoring system
* Neuman KM105 vocal microphone (silver)
* Boss TU7 Tuner pedal
* Lots of bespoke cables, most
identified with a ‘Puxley Ltd’ sticker.
Can you all keep an eye out for any of the
above, if you see or get offered these items
or spot them in the free ads or at car boots
etc......
If you do have info phone 07881 646 633
These are the tools of Miranda’s trade so she
is currently having to tour without these.

some hilarious rants on actors, the
& THE DISTRACTIONS Pope, the BBC. Inter working with the
Distractions, Mitch for his size, kept the
Who you may well ask is this Mitch
whole set thing moving, and himself
Benn, well anyone who listens to BBC
well tanked up with water (I’m assuming
Radio 4 ‘The Now Show’ will know that
it was only water)
Mitch is a regular contributor of the
This was a show that deserved a bigger
show since 1999 and BBC 2’s ‘It’s Been
stage and larger audience, the place
A Bad Week’ since 2000. He is of Liverpudlian
/ Scottish descent, as a stand
sadly, was half full, where are you Basingstoke
Without Arts Centres would
up comedian he is better known for his
talent like this disappear from live performances
If you get the chance to
humorous rock songs, which he has
performed at various music festivals
catch Mitch Benn & The Distractions
around the country plus a regular at the
‘The Rhythm Lord Tour 2010’ at one of
Edinburgh Festival Fringe, on top of
his shows do so you will not be disappointed!
For more info go to -
that he has released 7 albums over the
years of comedy rock songs. Mitch
Benn also won the best New Comedian www.mitchbenn.com
competition @ The Glastonbury Festival
in 1995 which was the start of the
many awards he has won since.
Mitch Benn & The Distractions have
been on tour since the 11th September
this year, which stated at The Cornerstone
in Didcot, they played the South
Street Arts Centre, Reading on September
30th and October 1st before appearing
at The Central Studio on the 2nd
October. I had not been to an event at
Central Studio for about 16 years, and
was presently surprised at how it had
changed and they had created a more
intermit setting with blue as the colour.
Mitch came on with his Distractions
bass player Kirsty Newton, who played
keyboard as well, and a drummer playing
a modern electronic kit, which he
really did handle well, both excellent
musicians. From the introduction
through to the end of the first half, Mitch
entertained, this guy is so quick and CENTRAL STUDIOS
clever, not forgetting fun and funny!! As Central Studio’s is a small theatre situated
on the campus of Queen Mary’s
they ended the first half Mitch said give
me some current topic’s and I will during
the break work out a song for the Not the easiest place to find!! And when
College, Cliddesden Road,Basingstoke.
second half, which when they reappeared
had, played setting the second easy to find the way out of the car park!!
dark and tipping down with rain not so
half as fast and entertaining as the first. Nice modern theatre, comfortable seating,
nice intimate setting
I really enjoyed this evening which involved
every aspect of life today, with
The band ‘Men in Spex’ first formed in
late 2000 near Bury St. Edmonds in Suffolk
after Neil Richards had moved from
number of years.
They all remained friends and kept in
Somerset following a job change.
contact, however when Neil returned to
Neil wanted to form an originals rock
band so he first set off in search of a
reunion gig in 2007 encouraged the
could. In 2009 Neil had met young Somerset
vocalist Nick Grimsley and he
driving desire was to write and perform
started to work with the band and sang
interesting, thoughtful, original rock
range of ages, musical tastes and experiences
and this is reflected in the way
the songs are put together. The band
In September 2010 the band entered the
The band name, unsurprisingly, came
closing the show and ending the series
for Patrick. Martin Gibson was over
forming the band) first met and realised
The band was active and very
much appreciated by everyone else in
the band! This was a significant experience,
which has re-energised the band,
material yet to be recorded, with
strong desire to gig and record again.
