A candidate's selection <strong>of</strong> major(s), minor(s) and <strong>of</strong> cross-departmental course combinations shall be<br />

made only with the approval <strong>of</strong> the Heads <strong>of</strong> the Departments/Centre/School concerned, and a<br />

candidate's choice shall normally be confined to those combinations which are possible under the<br />

published timetable. Candidates shall not be permitted to take, within their normal study load <strong>of</strong><br />

120 credits, more than 30 credits outside the Faculty, except that a candidate taking a major in the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Philosophy or in one <strong>of</strong> the following majors shall be permitted to take up to 48<br />

credits from the departments/school/programme listed in Regulation A9(c)(ii) above: American<br />

Studies, History, Linguistics and Philosophy, or Politics and Philosophy.<br />

Candidates who wish to exceed the normal load <strong>of</strong> 60 credits in each academic year shall be allowed<br />

to take up to 6 additional credits from the departments/school/programme listed in Regulation A9(b)<br />

and (c)(ii) above in each <strong>of</strong> second and third academic years <strong>of</strong> the <strong>BA</strong> curriculum.<br />

Assessment and grades<br />

A 12 Candidates shall be assessed for each <strong>of</strong> the courses for which they have registered, and<br />

assessment may be conducted in any combination <strong>of</strong>: coursework, written examinations or tests,<br />

continuous assessment <strong>of</strong> class performance, field work, research or project reports, or in any other<br />

manner as specified in the syllabuses. Grades shall be awarded in accordance with UG 5 <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Regulations for First Degree Curricula.<br />

A 13 Written examinations or tests shall normally be held at the end <strong>of</strong> the semester in which it is<br />

taught unless otherwise provided for in the syllabuses. Candidates may be required to sit written<br />

examinations or tests for more than one course on any particular date.<br />

A 14 Courses in which a candidate is given an F grade shall be recorded on the transcript,<br />

together with the new grade obtained by the candidate repeating the failed course under Regulation<br />

A16(a). Any failed grade(s) shall be included in calculating the Semester GPA and shall be taken<br />

into account for the purpose <strong>of</strong> honours classification, except as provided for under Regulation<br />

A16(b).
