CHINESE<br />
<strong>The</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Chinese is to promote the understanding <strong>of</strong> Chinese language,<br />
literature and history; to further the ability <strong>of</strong> the students in the use <strong>of</strong> the Chinese language; and to<br />
study the development <strong>of</strong> the Chinese civilization and its place in the modern world.<br />
<strong>The</strong> degree courses in the Department <strong>of</strong> Chinese are normally taught in Chinese. Course design is<br />
based on the assumption that the students have attained facility in the use <strong>of</strong> the Chinese language<br />
before entering the <strong>University</strong>, and that they have also acquired sufficient mastery <strong>of</strong> the English<br />
language to enable them to use freely references and relevant works published in English.<br />
Provision may be made from time to time for elective courses on various aspects <strong>of</strong> the Chinese<br />
civilization.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong>fers four majors and four minors in the second and third years.<br />
are as follows:<br />

(i) Chinese Language and Literature: Group A.<br />
(ii) Chinese History: Group B.<br />
(iii) Translation: Group C (please refer to Group C for other requirements).<br />
(iv) Chinese Studies: Groups A and B.<br />
Students are required to take not less than a total <strong>of</strong> 48 credits <strong>of</strong> second and third year courses in the<br />
specified group(s), and to meet other specified requirements, if any. Students who intend to major<br />
in Chinese Language and Literature or in Translation are required to take the following first year<br />
courses as prerequisites unless the Head <strong>of</strong> Department approves otherwise:<br />

Chinese Language and Literature majors: CHIN1101. A survey <strong>of</strong> the Chinese language<br />
and a total <strong>of</strong> not less than 6 credits <strong>of</strong> other first year courses in Group A.<br />
Translation majors: CHIN1311. Introduction to translation and CHIN1312. Language<br />
studies for translation I.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re are no first year prerequisites for the majors in Chinese History and Chinese Studies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> four minors are as follows:<br />
(i) Chinese Language and Literature: Group A.<br />
(ii) Chinese History: Group B.<br />
(iii) Translation: limited to List 2 <strong>of</strong> Group C.<br />
(iv) Chinese Studies: Groups A and B.<br />
Students are required to take not less than 24 credits <strong>of</strong> second and third year courses in the specified<br />
group(s).<br />
<strong>The</strong>re are no first year prerequisites for the minors.<br />
Not all the courses listed below will be <strong>of</strong>fered every year. Students should refer to the<br />
departmental undergraduate handbook, published yearly and usually in the summer, for the courses<br />
on <strong>of</strong>fer in the next academic year.
