Contrastive phonology <strong>of</strong> Putonghua and Cantonese (3 credits)<br />

This course aims to help students gain knowledge <strong>of</strong> the phonological differences and<br />
correspondences between Putonghua and Cantonese and thus improve students' language abilities in<br />
spoken Chinese.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> Chinese women’s literature in its various forms and styles conducted through an<br />
examination <strong>of</strong> specimens taken from the most representative as well as best known writers.<br />
Students taking this course are expected to gain a sound knowledge <strong>of</strong> the development and<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> Chinese women’s literature from the Han period to contemporary China.<br />

Prose up to the nineteenth century (6 credits)<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> Chinese prose in its various forms and styles conducted through an examination <strong>of</strong><br />
specimens taken from the most representative as well as best known authors. Students taking this<br />
course are expected to gain a sound knowledge <strong>of</strong> the development and characteristics <strong>of</strong> Chinese<br />
prose from the pre-Qin period to the end <strong>of</strong> the Qing period.<br />
Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.<br />

A detailed study <strong>of</strong> the prose <strong>of</strong> one or two <strong>of</strong> the following: Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan, Ouyang Xiu,<br />
Wang Anshi and Su Shi. Students taking this course are expected to demonstrate a sound<br />
knowledge <strong>of</strong> the prose works covered and a general ability to describe and analyse prose styles.<br />
