Selection <strong>of</strong> courses<br />

A 5 Candidates shall select their courses in accordance with these regulations and the guidelines<br />

specified in the syllabuses before the beginning <strong>of</strong> each semester. Changes to the selection <strong>of</strong><br />

courses may be made only during the first two weeks <strong>of</strong> the semester in which the course begins,<br />

and such changes shall not be reflected in the transcript <strong>of</strong> the candidate. Requests for changes<br />

after the first two weeks <strong>of</strong> the semester shall not normally be considered.<br />

A 6 Candidates in any semester shall select courses only after obtaining approval from the<br />

Heads <strong>of</strong> the Departments concerned, and the selection shall be subject to confirmation by the Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Faculty. Withdrawal beyond the two-week deadline will not be permitted, except for<br />

medical reasons approved by the Board <strong>of</strong> the Faculty, and the course concerned will be given a<br />

failed grade.<br />

Curriculum requirements<br />

A 7<br />

To complete the curriculum, candidates shall<br />

(a)<br />

(b)<br />

satisfy the requirements prescribed in UG 3 <strong>of</strong> the Regulations <strong>of</strong> First Degree<br />

Curricula, and<br />

take not fewer than 180 credits, in the manner specified in these regulations and the<br />

syllabuses.<br />

A 8 Candidates shall not normally take fewer than 30, nor more than 36, credits in each semester,<br />

except for the last semester <strong>of</strong> study, unless otherwise permitted or required by the Board <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Faculty.<br />

A 9 To complete the first and second semesters <strong>of</strong> the curriculum, candidates shall follow<br />

instruction and satisfy the examiners in 60 credits designated as First Year or Level 100 courses,<br />

including:<br />

(a)<br />

four 3-credit courses: Academic English for <strong>Arts</strong> Students; Chinese Language<br />

Enhancement; Information Technology; and one 3-credit course in Science and<br />

Technology studies for non-science students;<br />

[Some candidates, e.g. those who are non-Cantonese speaking or have no<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> the language, may be exempted from attending the Chinese language<br />

enhancement course and permitted to substitute another 3-credit course for it.<br />

Candidates may be exempted from attending the Information Technology course on<br />

the basis <strong>of</strong> the results obtained from an aptitude test in IT, or by satisfying the<br />

examiners in an approved course which incorporates an IT element as specified in<br />

the syllabuses.]<br />

(b)<br />

at least 6 credits from a single department/programme/centre in each <strong>of</strong> any three<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the following four groupings:<br />

Group 1 - American Studies, Chinese, English, European Studies, Japanese<br />

Studies, Language and Communication, Language Centre<br />

Group 2 - Geography, History<br />

Group 3 - Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy<br />

Group 4 - Fine <strong>Arts</strong>, Music; and
