American Bar Association<br />
The Paralegal program was granted re-approval by the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association on Feb.<br />
14, 2007, after an extensive self-study and a site visit. The Paralegal course of study is the only ABA approved program<br />
in the local area.<br />
Second Associate Degree<br />
When another associate degree is taken simultaneously or has been taken previously the second associate degree may<br />
be granted upon the completion of all required work for the second degree. In addition, the student must complete<br />
sufficient approved courses to total 15 semester hours above the number required for the degree having the greater<br />
semester hours requirement. In most cases, the hour requirement will be fulfilled by meeting the second degree<br />
requirements.<br />
Computer Information Systems<br />
The CIS program prepares students to enter the field of information technology. Students completing degrees offered<br />
in this program are prepared for jobs supporting computer users in business and industry. The degrees are targeted<br />
toward developing proficiency in computer networking, computer hardware troubleshooting and repair, software<br />
applications, operating systems, computer programming and solutions development, web design and Internet research.<br />
The <strong>College</strong> is a Microsoft IT Academy and a Local Cisco Networking Academy. Microsoft and Cisco certifications<br />
mean program credibility, industry-wide recognition and current technological training in computer applications,<br />
operating systems, programming, hardware, and networking. The Internet and related technologies are pervasive<br />
throughout the CIS curriculum.<br />
Microsoft IT Academy<br />
Microsoft IT Academies are educational institutions, including accredited colleges and universities, which offer<br />
authorized Microsoft courseware as an integral part of degree plans.<br />
Courses in the CIS degree track are designed to prepare students seeking certification as a Microsoft Certified IT<br />
Professional (MCITP). Microsoft certification information is available at www.microsoft.com.<br />
Microsoft Certified IT Professionals (MCITP) are qualified to manage and troubleshoot system environments running<br />
a current Windows operating system such as, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7.<br />
Cisco Networking Academy<br />
<strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>College</strong>-<strong>Port</strong> <strong>Arthur</strong> teams with Cisco Systems Inc., a worldwide leader in networking for the Internet,<br />
to be a Cisco Networking Academy.<br />
In the Academy program, students learn how to design, build and maintain Cisco-based computer networks. The<br />
program is designed to help students prepare to take standardized tests to qualify as a Cisco Certified Network<br />
Associate (CCNA).<br />
Course work is provided for a complete range of basic through advanced networking concepts from pulling cable to<br />
such complex concepts as subnet masking rules and strategies to internetwork troubleshooting. In the Academy<br />
program, students learn fundamental networking concepts and have a chance to apply their new skills in the projectbased,<br />
hands-on lab portion of the curriculum.<br />
The successful CIS program student has the option of acquiring education with a goal toward the CCNA by taking<br />
courses outlined in the Associate of Applied Science degree (CCNA).<br />
CIS Module Courses<br />
The degrees and certificates offered by the CIS program traditionally are arranged within the CIS curriculum by 16-<br />
week semesters. However, certain courses are offered in shorter eight-week sessions and may include additional<br />
requirements regarding the order in which they should be taken. Students should note the prerequisites of each course<br />
and consult with a faculty mentor to determine the specific sequence in which classes should be taken within a semester.<br />
Accounting<br />
The accounting degree will allow students to develop essential skills in analytical, conceptual, and technical<br />
proficiency in accounting. Students will learn to understand the financial world through the use of ledgers, financial<br />
statements, and budgets. This degree introduces students to courses such as computerized accounting, managerial<br />
accounting, and forensic accounting.
