ardening: Work or pleasure
by Debra Johnson
know you’ve heard the saying,
“one man’s trash is another
man’s treasure.” Well, you might
could almost say the same about
gardening: “One man’s work is another
man’s pleasure.”
I enjoy working in the vegetable
garden, and others prefer flower
gardening.
I’ve been associated with gardening
ever since I was a child. My
grandparents lived on a farm, so
we would spend a lot of our summer
sitting under shade trees
shelling peas and shucking corn.
My family moved from town to a
farm when I was about 10 years
old, and the garden became a
family affair. Now, I still enjoy
planting vegetables, watching
them grow, and especially eating
them fresh out of the garden. I’ve
often been asked why I wanted to
fool with a garden since there is so
much work involved, but really
while working in the garden, you
are getting plenty of exercise and
sun, not to mention the pleasure
of seeing your garden produce delicious
vegetables. The work doesn’t
stop when the vegetables
arrive. Then you have the job of
gathering them and then canning
or freezing for food later on in the
winter. It is not uncommon to see
gardens in the country, but there
are also quite a few garden spots
in town. I guess there are a lot of
people that enjoy growing fresh
vegetables as I do. I hope there will
be young people that are interested
in vegetable gardening and
that it will continue with each new
generation and not become a lost
tradition.
