Page 16 the valley star June 28, 2012 ALLISON’S ATTIC by Allison Banta Not so traditional door wreaths Ilove holidays, and I love decorating for them. That being said, I’m generally not on top of my game in that Allison Banta area. Holidays always sneak up on me. My front door is my favorite place to change things up, so I’m usually left debating the merits of creating a whole new wreath just 8 days before the actual holiday. If I’m only going to be able to leave it hanging up for a week – why even bother In my true procrastinator fashion, I just realized that the 4th of July is next week and I am, as usual, completely unprepared in the front door décor department. A new wreath actually won out over laziness this time, mostly because I realized that I can also justify putting it out during the Olympics and at Labor Day too – and I’m all for anything that’s multipurpose. This project isn’t a traditional wreath, and there are two reasons for that. 1. Traditional gets a little boring after a while. 2. I had new washi tape that was begging to be used. If you want to try it you’ll need: a 5x7 white picture frame, red and blue washi tape – one roll of each (available at most craft stores and Target), wide blue ribbon, 1 yard of red burlap, and a giant embroidery hoop. Start by ironing your burlap. Place the burlap inside the embroidery hoop, tighten the hoop until burlap is taut and smooth, and then trim excess burlap. Next, remove the glass and backing from your picture frame. Using your washi tape, create an American flag on the backing. You just want to make a rough flag shape – if you’re a perfectionist this might not be a great project for you. Discard the glass and put your “flag” back into the frame. Staple or tape your blue ribbon to the back of the picture frame, and then run the ribbon through the top of the hoop. I added some wooden stars to mine, but you could also add more ribbons or a bow if you wanted a little extra interest. One disclaimer: please don’t blame me if you end up humming “My Country ‘Tis Of Thee”, “America The Beautiful”, or “The Star Spangled Banner” for three days straight. June 28, 2012 the valley star Page 17 The Valley Star | feature Smoking Railroad Street BBQ Cookoff By: Danny Johnson he boys and girls who enjoy cooking and eating succulent, smoked meat converged on Elkmont, last weekend for bragging rights. Larry Pylant, event director, again had good participation and a good time for teams competing in the cook-off and plenty of good food available for on-lookers. Teams as far away as Nashville, Tenn. and Scottsboro, were contestants in the cooking event. Backyard competitions have become a popular event around this area. Savory smells of ribs and chicken filled the air as I made my way to the cook site across from the Red Caboose. The first team I made contact with was Team Bertha, who invited my wife, Debra, and I to try some of their tasty food. I never turn down an opportunity to a feed. After a half-dozen ribs and a few tasty wings we made our way throughout the cooking area. Proceeds from this cooking contest go to help fund projects sponsored by the Elkmont Lions Club. The weather was a little hot, but there were plenty of shade trees and cold drinks to keep everybody pretty cool. If you have a need to feed on tasty smoked vittles, I suggest you take a trip to Elkmont next year and visit the cook-off event.
