UNCLE BONDEE’S ADVENTURES by Uncle Bondee ruck Patch farming pays off With summer underway the garden crops were coming in. The tomatoes Uncle Bondee were always ready by the 4 th of July. alton had planted a big field of atermelons this year and they ere getting ripe and ready to sell. umpy said, “ Let’s peddle some f the garden vegetables out of the back of our pickup truck.” We always were trying to come up with ways to make a little spending money. There was a problem. We didn’t have a pickup truck. Humpy said he would borrow his Uncle Melvin’s 1950 Chevrolet truck. A load of fresh produce would sell quickly if we brought it to Athens. The gang loaded the truck early Saturday morning, and we made our way to the square in Athens. The truck was loaded with tomatoes, corn, squash, and big ipe watermelons. The town was usy with people and we parked the truck in front of the 5 & dime store. This was one of the favorite spots for people to visit and shop. The kids liked the 5 and dime store because of all of the different kinds of candy they sold. The first customer we had walked up and said, “That’s some mighty fine looking stuff yawl have there. Where did yawl grow that stuff at I answered, “Gourdsville on Shoal Creek.” He replied, “That is some of the best soil in the county.” That black land will raise anything. The gentleman said, “Give me a half dozen of them tomatoes and a couple of watermelons.” The people started buying the vegetables as fast as we could wait on them. There was one man named Chuck that tried to jew us down on our prices. He must have been short on money, and we gave him a little discount. By noon the truck was empty, and we had a pocket full of money. I said, “Let’s go by the Creme Delight on our way home and get some ice cream.” The square was a place everybody came to on Saturday. There were water fountains on every corner. I guess shopping made people really thirsty. On our way back to the Gaston Holler we stopped at Cross Key and put some gas in Uncle Melvin’s truck. Gas was only 25 cents a gallon back then. After eating a lunch of souse meat and hoop cheese we made our way home before dark. After giving Uncle Melvin a cut of our sale, he told us we could use the truck any time we wanted to. We made several trips to Athens that summer and sold vegetables until they ran out. Big city folks were always wanting to buy things we grew and made on the farm. After the produce was gone we sold several cans of molasses. The money we made went a long way in buying shoes and clothes for starting back to school. Humpy said, “If you are willing to sweat a little, there is money to be made.” That fall on Saturdays we sold turnip greens. During the winter months sugar cured hams and oak firewood sold great. June 28, 2012 the valley star Page 19 The Valley Star | feature Tony Kirk is new Athens Fire Chief candidates for the position. Council members Jimmy Gill, Harold Wales, and Jim Hickman voted to name Kirk chief. Council members Milly Caudle and Mignon Bowers abstained. Wales said, “We had two people inhouse who were very good candidates. We can’t pick but one. I think Tony, with the 25 years he already has in service, will make an excellent fire chief.” Hickman said it was a tough decision, but added, “I believe Tony will be an excellent choice.” Council President Jimmy Gill said although the choice wasn’t unanimous, the council will work with Kirk and move forward. Kirk has said that as chief he would want to address industrial and residential growth by adding a station to the north side of the city. Another goal he has is a training facility for the staff. Kirk starts his 26th year with the department in July. He also serves as a volunteer firefighter with the East Limestone Volunteer Fire Department, where he was treasurer for 15 years. he Athens City Council voted to appoint Fire Prevention Chief Tony Kirk as fire chief. Former Fire Chief, Danny Southard, retired Jan. 31, and Mayor Ronnie Marks has been serving as acting chief since Southard’s retirement.
