Intensive Care Foundation
The Intensive Care Foundation has raised over
$3.2 million and awarded over $1 million in
research grants since the Appeal was launched in
2000. Although the Foundation was established
by ANZICS, we are an independent body and our
primary aim of supporting high quality research
in intensive care is shared by all organizations
within the intensive care community. This is
reflected in our recent re-branding as simply 'The
Intensive Care Foundation' rather than ANZICF
and ANZIC Foundation.
In this spirit, I met with the Faculty Board last
year with the aim of exploring a more formal
partnership between the two bodies. I am
pleased to report that, although our discussion
was general in nature, it was very positive, and I
hope we can develop some more specific
initiatives in the near future.
Our major public fundraising campaign, the
Intensive Care Appeal, will run from 2 - 16 April. I
ask all Fellows to reflect on how they might assist
us, whether through the sale of our new
wristbands, the promotion of good news stories
through the media (our colleagues can assist) or
the setting up of displays in hospitals and waiting
rooms. It all helps. I ask you also to consider
adding the Foundation to the list of charities to
which you and your family regularly donate. If
we don't support our own research foundation,
why should anyone else

Staff Profile
Laura Fernandez
Laura commenced with the Joint Faculty in
August 2005 in the new role of
Administrative Officer (Education). This
position includes managing the secretariats
of the Joint Faculty's Education Committee,
Hospital Accreditation Committee and
assisting the Trainee Committee. Hospital
accreditation applications and visits,
information regarding courses, assisting
Supervisors of Training, and facilitating the
assessment of Formal Projects also come
within her portfolio. In addition, Laura
handles enquiries relating to the Journal of
Critical Care and Resuscitation.

Call for Abstracts – Felicity Hawker Medal
Laura's qualifications include a B. Applied
Science, specialising in Biomedical Science.
She enjoys reading and music and has
spent a year living in Spain exploring her
heritage. She is interested in China and
Japan and has recently acquired a cat
named Miyabi.

Invitation
The Organising Committee invites submission of Abstracts
for consideration of the Felicity Hawker Medal to be
presented during the JFICM ASM 2006.
The Felicity Hawker Medal will be awarded for the best
presentation of a Formal Project. To be eligible to present
for the Felicity Hawker Medal an applicant must be a
Trainee or Fellow within one year of award of Diploma of
Fellowship.
Further comprehensive information on the Prize and
formatting and submission of abstracts will be available
on the JFICM ASM 2006 website (to be developed shortly) or from Ms Juliette Mullumby at the
Conference Secretariat: jmullumby@anzca.edu.au
The closing date for abstracts will be 1 April 2006 and notification of selection will be mid April
2006. All presenters are required to register for the meeting by 30 April 2006. Oral presenters
will be notified of presentation time by 15 May 2006.
