60 Bulletin March 2006 Policy Documents – Under Review In line with College policy, the following Policy Documents are due for review in 2006: TE14 EX1 PS2 PS6 PS12 PS16 PS19 PS20 PS43 PS44 PS45 Guidelines for the In-Training Assessment of Trainees in Anaesthesia Examination Candidates Suffering from Illness, Accident or Disability Statement on Credentialling in Anaesthesia Recommendations on Minimum Requirements for the Anaesthesia Record Statement on Smoking as Related to the Perioperative Period Statement on the Standards of Practice of a Specialist Anaesthetist Recommendations on Monitored Care by an Anaesthetist Recommendations for Responsibilities of the Anaesthetist in the Post-Operative Period Statement on Fatigue and the Anaesthetist Guidelines to Fellows Acting on Appointments Committees for Senior Staff in Anaesthesia Statement on Patients’ Rights to Pain Management Council will welcome any input or suggestions relating to these documents which will be considered during the review. Specialist Re-Entry Program (SREP) The Australian Government has developed a plan to assist specialists who want to return to practice and who would like to spend time refreshing their knowledge and skills in a private practice setting. Government funds are available to assist specialists who: Hold Fellowship of the College Hold current medical registration Hold current medical indemnity Intend to return to the specialist medical workforce in Australia It is anticipated that the Fellow: Will have been absent from specialist clinical practice for between six months and ten years Will have negotiated a placement in a private practice of their choice Will have negotiated with an appropriate mentor for support Funds will be provided for administrative costs for the relevant practice, for mentor support and training and for colleges for administrative support. The specialist concerned cannot be paid by the Government, which anticipates the person will bill Medicare for services to private patients. Note: The project officers have indicated that, should there be little interest in the above scheme, and if there are applications from specialists who would prefer their experience to be in a public hospital setting, the department may be able to access the funds normally reserved for the private practice, mentor and training. The scheme will operate for four years, from July 2004. Lismore Base Hospital Medical Administration PO Box 419 Lismore 2480 Tel: 66202353 Fax: 66207470 Director of Anaesthesia (Staff Specialist) Situated in the northeast of New South Wales, Lismore is surrounded by the beaches of Byron Bay, Ballina and Lennox Head and by world-renowned rainforests such as Mt Warning, Border Ranges and Nightcap National Parks. By road the Gold Coast is only eighty minutes away and Brisbane only two and a half hours. Lismore Base Hospital is an acute referral hospital of 200 beds with 70 Specialist Visiting Medical Officers, 13 Staff Specialists and 13 accredited training Registrars. A full range of general medical and surgical services are provided along with sub-speciality services such as Vascular Surgery and Haematology/ Oncology. It is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the Universities of Newcastle, Queensland, NSW and Sydney. The Anaesthetist: • Will provide leadership and management of the Department of Anaesthesia at Lismore Base Hospital • Will provide comprehensive anaesthetic services to the North Coast Area Health Service primarily at Lismore Base Hospital, and also anaesthesia for elective surgery at Ballina, Byron Bay, Casino and Maclean Hospitals. • Will participate in the milieu of Lismore Base Hospital including relevant committees and interdepartmental functions. • Will participate in a 1:12 on-call roster subject to available practitioners. Essential: Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and/or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
