Lack of discipline proved costly for
Te Awamutu Bowers Cup 45kg rugby
team beaten 13-5 by Matamata.

reps started well into the wind playing
in front of a good crowd at Albert Park.
Te Awamutu dominated the opening
10 minutes, only to let the opposition
off by giving penalties away at
the break down.
Matamata’s brilliant first five used
the wind to good effect, getting his side
into opposition territory with his
educated boot. He then dived over for
the opening try to give Matamata a 5-0
lead.
The visitors had their tails up and
camped in Te Awamutu’s half.
They increased their lead to 8-0 at

The second half was much more
promising for Te Awamutu playing
with the wind at their backs.
Jack Wade crashed over in the
corner to make it 8-5.
But from the restart, Te Awamutu
failed to get control and conceded a
penalty. Matamata took the quick tap
and their first five waltzed over for his
second try 12 minutes into the second
half.
Trailing 13-5, Te Awamutu camped
in Matamata’s 22 for the rest of the
game. Problem was, they gave away
penalties each time they drove for the
line.
Te Awamutu’s two remaining
games this Sunday are against Hamilton
Black and Cambridge at Morrinsville.

Pikari turns four shot deficit
into thrilling one shot victory

Te Awamutu’s Compton Pikari
shot a final round three-under-par 69
to win the prestigious ASB Cambridge
Golf Classic.
The 16-year-old went into the last
round trailing Rotorua’s Peter Lee by
four shots.
Lee was unable to recapture the
scintillating form he showed
breaking the course record with 65 in
the second round — finishing with a
disappointing final round 74 to be
pipped by one shot.
Pikari was in sublime form
throughout the tournament,
recording three sub par rounds out of
four — shooting 74, 70, 71, 69 for a
72-hole aggregate total of 284.
Cambridge club manager, Alan
Castle told the Courier that he had
been watching the progress of young
Pikari for the last few years.
‘‘He’s improved out of sight. He’s
been putting a lot of effort into
playing good golf and is being
rewarded.’’
Pikari’s Te Awamutu club-mate
Campbell Larkins-Hawira entered
the Cambridge Classic as part of the
Waikato Development Squad.
He shot a four round total of 333,
including a creditable final round 81,
and would have benefited from the
experience.
