Heritage awards
The winners of the 2011 Waipa Heritage Awards
will be unveiled at a special function at Cambridge’s
St Andrews Hall next Thursday night.
Organiser Jan White says the guest speaker will
be the entertaining and informative Dr Anne
McEwen speaking on ‘Just say ‘No!: staying the
distance with heritage research and protection’.
‘‘She is keen to offer a rallying cry for folk who
are working hard to save heritage buildings and
places, both through their efforts to research and to
manage such places to ensure their future survival,’’
Mrs White says.
‘‘As the new Waipa District Plan is due to be
publicly notified in September, she thinks that it is
timely to remind people that sound research and
appropriate protection measures are vital if we are
to sustainably manage our historic heritage
resources.’’
Anyone wanting to attend the August 25 awards
(which start at 5.30pm) should RSVP by phoning 872

AROHENA School students were delighted by the arrival of snow at school on Monday morning.
Lessons were set to one side as snow fell for 15 minutes for the first time in memory at Arohena School.
Teachers joined students in the excitement of experiencing the falling snow. Each year Arohena School
visits Mt. Ruapehu on a ski trip, but never expected to be coated in snow at school. New principal,
Andrew Chesswas says that students were mesmerised by the unexpected snow, which were likely to
be a once in a life-time experience in Arohena.
Organisers would love to hear
from bands from Te Awamutu
and surrounding areas.
They say there is a wealth of
musical talent in the Waikato —
and a huge range of styles —
evident by previous winners Sora
Shima (2008), Knights of the Dub
Bridge tourney tops
Te Awamutu Bridge Club’s annual Intermediate
Tournament attracted players from Huntly to Taupo
and plenty of places in between.
The tournament was open to all intermediate and
junior players. Local players took their fair share of
the prizes with Bunny Cox and partner Richard
Knight coming in second overall and Marie Berry
and partner Anne Bovet taking out a session prize in
the afternoon. Te Awamutu players also won the
first two prizes of the three raffles on offer.

Guess what - it was cold
Courier weather watchers recorded below zero
temperatures in a week where snow was seen in
many places for the first time in living memory.
Parawera had the lowest minimum temperature
at -5 degrees, with Pirongia and Pukeatua on -2 and
Ngahinapouri on -1. Highest maximum was 18
degrees at Ngahinapouri, followed by Pirongia and
Pukeatua on 17 and Parawera on 12.
Pirongia had most rainfall with 48mm, while
Parawera had 24, Ngahinapouri 21 and Pukeatua 20.
