Local company wins
grant to develop
hi-tech equipment
Local company BBC Technologies
has been awarded a
research and development grant
to develop hi-tech fruit sorting
equipment for export to the
lucrative global blueberry and
cherry markets.
The Technology Development
Grant is administered by the
Ministry of Science and Innovation
(MSI) and supports firms
with a good track record in, and
which spend a significant proportion
of their revenue on,
research and development .
BBC Technologies is located
on Jary Road.
General manager Geoff
Furniss says the grant will provide
the company with the
ability to build upon its
innovative edge in the international
market and maintain its
research and development focus
here in New Zealand.
‘‘It’s a great recognition of the
efforts the team has made over
the past 15 years,’’ he says.
MSI deputy chief executive
business investment and innovation
Brett O’Riley says MSI’s
support will mean BBC Technologies
will be able to invest in
research and development over
the next three years.
‘‘It will allow them to keep on
doing what they are good at —
developing innovative and
profitable products and services
and take them to their clients all
over the world.’’
The company’s research and
development program over the
next three years includes further
developing vision based sorting,
filling and weighing systems and
software tools to provide
orchard process control and
management systems beyond
the packhouse to the field.
The economic impact to the
New Zealand economy resulting
from the research projects is
expected to be $13 million over
the next five years.
BBC Technologies emerged
over a decade ago when the need
to improve fruit sorting arose at
their Ohaupo blueberry farm.
Specialist design staff were
employed to create the Color
Sorta — a unique electronic
machine separating green and
red berries from blueberries.
Based on the product success,
the company has since grown to
design, manufacture and export
a wide range of hi-tech fruit
sorting and packing equipment
around the globe.
Zero Limits Gym facing
up to prostate cancer
Six regular members of Zero Limits Gym are
putting their leg hair on the line for Blue September
as a way of raising awareness and money for the
Prostate Cancer Foundation.
While the blokes are busy getting sponsorship to
have their legs waxed, the team at Zero Limits are
organising an event to be held on Blue Friday
(Friday, September 2).
The event takes place at the Rickit Road gym at
5.30pm and includes the public leg waxing of the
participants, two guest speakers, food and
refreshments for just $10.
Gym members and management decided to get
behind Blue September after hearing about a couple
of members who have or are dealing with this
problem.
They thought it was an area of men’s health that
could do with more awareness, and by banding
together, they could help make a difference and
remind men how important it is to have regular
check-ups.
Anyone wishing to assist the gym and members
with this worthwhile cause, through sponsorship or
by attending the Blue Friday event, can contact the
gym (871 3535, info@zerolimitsgym.co.nz) or check
their www.zerolimitsgym.co.nz website.
