Mountain Men hold out Ohaupo promotion bid Pirongia earned the right to remain in Waikato division one rugby next season beating arch rivals Ohaupo 24-7 in a promotion-relegation game. Ken Collins reports that the game had all the makings of a classic local derby. The rivalry goes back nearly 125 years. At stake was not only division one status, but the Macanally Cup — a trophy played for every year by these two clubs. Ohaupo opened the scoring with a well taken converted try from a potent back attack. Collins says this seemed to ignite the Pirongia forwards. The intensity level went up a couple of notches with some good old fashioned rolling mauls, hard tackles and rucking. Pirongia were rewarded with a try in the corner to wing Ash Lambert after some good forward drives. The try was unconverted and Ohaupo went to halftime leading 7-5. The momentum was with Pirongia, securing turnovers at rucks and using their forwards effectively to keep Ohaupo on the back foot. Pirongia took the lead with a try to halfback Devon Lydford after breaking from a maul. The try was unconverted. Ohaupo had plenty of opportunities but were Hollinshead eliminates hot Te Ao John Hollinshead caused a major upset defeating top seed Atu Te Ao in the senior matchplay championship at Stewart Alexander Golf Club. Peter Way reports that Te Ao struggled to get his game together, while Hollinshead played solid golf all day to win 3/2. Shayne Ashford takes over as favourite for the title after Bryan Downie has been ruled out with a serious knee injury suffered playing rugby. All other matches went according to form, although in the junior section, Dave Coupland recovered from four down at the turn to topple Gary Grylls. In Sunday’s Waste Management’s sponsored tournament, 14 handicapper Roger Neal shot 74 offthe-stick to record a massive 46 stableford points. He was five under the card after seven holes. Nick Heffer came in a distant second with 41 points, followed by John Hollinshead, Ant Imeson and Mel Brown on 39, Ian Coleman, Neal Johnston and Robin Cox 38 and Phil Blundell and Reg Parkes 37 b/l. Hollinshead completed a good day at the office winning the NEC jackpot with a birdie three on the par four 11th. Russo cup win at Pirongia Wayne Russo shot a sparkling 67 net to claim the Coca Cola Cup at Pirongia Golf Club. Hot hot on his heels were Gary Bowman with 68, and Martin Eyre and Derek Boyle on 69. Boyle was left lamenting ‘what if’ after finishing his round on Sunday. He was safely on the par three, second green, only to four putt. He then found the fairway long and up the middle at 14, only to put his second shot down over the bank to score a bogey. The senior men’s scramble was won by Russo with 67 net, from G. Bowman 68, M. Eyre 69, D. Baty, A.J. Johnston, S. Vaile, G. Russo 72, G. Cornwall 73 and G. MacIntyre 75. Boyle headed the junior scramble with 69 net, from K. Nickson, R. Bretell (Cambridge) 70, R. Bailey 71, C Coles 72, H. Nieremeijer, G. Tocker 74 and I. Grey, R. Goodhew, I. Bretell (Cambridge) 76. Closest to pin was won by D. Lamb, while Jim Dunn claimed the longest putt prize. Summer sports The Courier will be running its summer sports feature on Tuesday, September 20. It is an opportunity for all sporting codes to promote their club. Contact either Dorinda Courtney or Colin Thorsen to book space. unable to complete promising attacks. They were frustrated by solid Pirongia defence and passes going to ground. Ohaupo never stopped trying, but seemed unable to bring their A game. Pirongia were able to feed off Ohaupo’s mistakes and took their opportunities to score two more converted tries to wing Kahn Adams and blindside flanker Chris Reymer. It was Reymer’s first try in six years. The game lived up to expectations with hard, uncompromising rugby. Collins says he and other old boys standing on the sideline, recalled their part in this traditional rivalry from their playing days. ‘‘May it long continue,’’ he says. The win capped a successful end to Pirongia’s centennial season, coming on the back of a win over Kereone last weekend to claim the bottom four plate in Waikato division one competition after a horror start in 2011. 8290689AA TE AWAMUTU COURIER, THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2011 19 Schofield, Duncan TA golfers to shine Mathew Schofield put the disappointment of being pipped in the strokeplay championship behind him shooting 76 at ASB Te Awamutu Golf on Sunday.
