Seniors’ fitness class success
about more than exercise

Having fun is the order of the day when
a group of ‘more mature’ Te Awamutu folk
get together every Tuesday morning at the
Presbyterian Church Hall in Mutu Street
to exercise and enjoy each others company.
Organiser Olive Hewitt-Bryant says
the secret to the group’s success is simple.
‘‘It comes down to their enthusiasm for
making fun the first priority and really
enjoying each others company’’.
When the Courier visited to see what
the fun was all about, it was easy to see
why the class has become so popular.
Mrs Hewitt-Bryant begins by
introducing the group to a ‘thought for the
day’.
‘‘It might just be a little saying,
something to tickle your fancy or think
about,’’ Mrs Hewitt-Bryant says.
Then it’s on with the warm-up to
music, followed by a few minutes of
stretching.
Everyone just goes at it at their own
pace and ability level, without pressure.
In steps Janet White who guides the
group through a more intensive period of
movement followed by a glass of water
before the wind down phase.
Glen Philps (83) would not be without
the weekly class. She has been attending
four years.
‘‘Sometimes you can feel a little down
in the dumps then when you start
exercising and having fun you feel like a
box of birds,’’ she says.
For others, there’s a story behind
joining the group.
Nearly eight years ago, having just
moved to Te Awamutu from Hamilton and
not knowing a soul, Lorraine Hamilton
had a terrible accident when her vehicle
skidded on a patch of diesel and hit
another vehicle head-on.
She sustained serious injuries which
affected her ability to move.
She was also house-bound and isolated

exercise class and decided to join in.
‘‘It was the best thing I ever did. Now I
get a smile from others in the group when
I see them out and about in town,’’ Mrs
Hamilton says.
From talking to others it is obvious
that fellowship is the key ingredient
binding the group together.

Edwards sums it up.
‘‘I have always been to a gym. I walk 30
minutes to get here, have so much fun
with my friends then walk home again. It
keeps me young.’’
New members are welcome to join. Just
