NATIONAL TRUST VISITOR CENTRES<br />

The George Town Centre (Dart Park 558 S.<br />

Church St.) is open Monday-Friday 9am-5:00pm<br />

and on Saturdays from 9am-1pm. The Eastern<br />

District Visitor centre (located at the Mission<br />

House in Bodden Town) is open Monday-Friday<br />

9am-5:00pm. Reservations encouraged. Little<br />

<strong>Cayman</strong>’s Visitor Centre is open Monday-Saturday<br />

9am-noon and 2pm-6pm. All feature a gift shop,<br />

island information, tours and birdwatching as well<br />

as free helpful advice. The Trust also posts its<br />

calendar of events on their website:<br />

www.nationaltrust.org.ky. Visitors are welcome to<br />

book any of the fun activities via phone or email.<br />

FORT GEORGE HISTORIC SITE<br />

Built around 1780 to defend against Spanish<br />

marauders, Fort George was largely destroyed by<br />

developers in 1972. A National Trust property<br />

since 1987, it is preserved in perpetuity.<br />

Interpretive signage on site.<br />

DR. ROY'S IRONSHORE HISTORIC SITE<br />

The “Ironshore” across from the former homesite<br />

of the late Dr. Roy McTaggart overlooks historic<br />

George Town Harbour. It is the perfect place for<br />

watching the sunset. Interpretive signage on site.<br />

WATLER CEMETERY HISTORIC SITE<br />

The Watler Cemetery is home to traditional<br />

“house-shaped” graves considered to be unique to the<br />

<strong>Cayman</strong> <strong>Islands</strong>. Interpretive signage gives a historic<br />

reflection of the cemetery and surrounding area.<br />

GOVERNOR MICHAEL GORE BIRD<br />

SANCTUARY<br />

This fresh-water pond is home to one-third of the<br />

bird species recorded in the <strong>Cayman</strong> <strong>Islands</strong>. Quiet<br />

visitors will be rewarded by the sight of waterbirds<br />

and wading birds living in this oasis surrounded by<br />

the Spotts-Newlands neighbourhood.<br />

SAVANNAH SCHOOL HOUSE HISTORIC SITE<br />

This wattle and daub building, built with<br />

Ironwood posts and lime plaster from coral rocks,<br />

opened its doors for classes in 1940. It was<br />

used as a classroom for 41 years in Savannah.<br />

Open by appointment only.<br />

BODDEN TOWN GUARDHOUSE PARK<br />

This highest spot in Bodden Town was the site<br />

of an old fort long since destroyed. During World<br />

War II, a lookout post was established to scan<br />

the seas for German submarines. Interpretive<br />

signage gives a record of Bodden Town's history<br />

and attractions.<br />

MISSION HOUSE HISTORIC SITE<br />

This small home museum focuses on the home<br />

and its inhabitants’ role and involvement in<br />

establishing early religion and education in<br />

the island’s first capital, Bodden Town. Adjacent<br />

to the newly opened Harry McCoy Public Park is<br />

a fresh water wetland which offers birdwatching<br />

opportunities. Open Monday-Friday 9am-1pm.<br />

Reservations are encouraged. Closed on public<br />

holidays. Available as a venue for small, special<br />

events. Admission $5 adults, $2.50 children<br />

(12 and under).<br />

HERITAGE BEACH<br />

This quiet beach faces Frank Sound, with crystal clear<br />

water, turtle grass beds and the distant coral reef.<br />

LIGHTHOUSE PARK<br />

Stone steps lead to the site of East End's light<br />

houses over the years. A modern solar lighthouse<br />

is still working with the remains of older gas-fired<br />

lighthouses still on site. Interpretive signage of<br />

the area is on site. This is a great spot for seeing<br />

butterflies and birds.<br />

SALINA RESERVE<br />

The National Trust's Salina Reserve is the site of<br />

the re-introduction of the endemic <strong>Cayman</strong> Blue<br />

Iguana. It comprises some <strong>60</strong>0 acres of mixed<br />

woodlands and wetlands home to many endangered<br />

plants and animal species. Reserve is inaccessible<br />

and is not open to the public.<br />

MASTIC TRAIL<br />

The two-mile long Mastic trail is the largest<br />

remaining contiguous area of untouched old<br />

growth forest in the <strong>Cayman</strong> <strong>Islands</strong>. The trail<br />

opens up a rare woodland world that has evolved<br />

undisturbed for two million years. Experience a<br />

variety of fascinating habitats from Black Mangrove<br />

wetland to stands of Silver Thatch Palms,<br />

abandoned agricultural land and extensive ancient<br />

dry forest. Discover now rare trees including<br />

Cedar, Mahogany and an exceptionally fine<br />

specimen of a Mastic Tree, for which the Reserve<br />

and Trail were named. The woodland is also home<br />

to a rich abundance of birds, animals, butterflies,<br />

lizards, frogs, large hermit crabs and non-poisonous<br />

snakes. Guided hikes of the Mastic Trail are available<br />

through the National Trust and are conducted<br />

weekly.<br />
