A 

Limousin man 

may be facing the 

death penalty in 

Indonesia following 

a drugs bust by 

local border authorities. Gérard 

Debetz, 53, was one of three 

people detained in the operation 

at Jakarta airport with over 5 

kg of methamphetamines in his 

luggage. It is believed that the 

Frenchman is the primary suspect 

and ring leader. The other two 

people arrested were an Iranian 

man and an Indonesian woman. 

The three suspects were 

paraded in front of TV cameras, 

with hoods covering their faces, 

as customs officials destroyed 

the drugs haul in a carefully 

choreographed publicity stunt. 

The drugs had an estimated street 

value of €650,000. 

The Limoges native was arrested 

in Jakarta as he disembarked from 

an Emirates flight arriving from 

Dubai. Customs officials x-rayed 

his luggage and found the 5.1 kg 

of drugs hidden in the lining of 

his suitcase. 

M. Debetz, more commonly 

know by the surname Garelli, is 

known to Limoges’ police and 

ran several businesses in the 

city before moving to Thailand a 

number of years ago. 

The authorities in Indonesia 

have a very hard stance on drugs 

offences and the accused face life 

in prison and the possibility of a 

death sentence. Indonesian drug 

laws prescribe the death penalty 

for narcotics trafficking and up 

20 years in prison for marijuana 

offenses. Simple possession 

results in prison terms of one to 

five years.

I’m still not quite sure 

how we have managed 

it this month, but it 

looks very much like 

March’s edition of 

The Bugle will be going to 

the printers on time and will 

be hand-delivered to over 300 

locations around the region by 

the first of March. It is quite 

an achievement to get the 

paper out in an average month 

(even if I do say so myself), 

but this month was especially 

tricky as it saw the arrival of 

the Bugle’s youngest reader 

when my wife gave birth to 

our daughter Eloise. It has 

been a crazy few weeks in 

the Martindale household and 

we have been learning that 

there is a reason that certain 

governments around the 

world use sleep deprivation as 

a form of torture…!! Still, I’m 

happy to say that mother and 

baby are both doing extremely 

well and Daisy, our 22-monthold, 

is absolutely loving her 

new role as ‘Big Sis’! I would 

like to say a big thank you to 

all those who sent messages 

of goodwill to us. 

You find beauty almost 

everywhere in rural France 

and I don’t always mean in 

a conventional sense. I went 

out for a walk recently with 

the expanded family, right in 

the middle of that wonderful 

hot spell we had (the mercury 

tipped 16 in our garden that 

day!) and we wandered past

our local farmer’s house. He 

is a true ‘Creusois’, born and 

bred. He once joked to me that 

going abroad for him involved 

a trip to Limoges! He has 

an infectious passion for the 

local countryside and the 

animals he tends and laughs 

that he knows nothing about 

the computers and technology 

that I am a slave to; but it 

would take quite literally a 

lifetime for me to learn what 

he knows about the land. 

We always buy our winter 

logs from him, as we know 

that we are going to get good 

quality wood. He dries his 

logs for years before selling 

them as firewood and it is 

all good quality oak. Our 

ramoneur does not have a 

difficult job when he comes to 

sweep our chimney. 

He has obviously been 

doing a bit of chopping 

recently, as when we walked 

past the other day, we came 

across his most recent log 

stack (see photo) and it 

suddenly struck me what a 

thing of outstanding beauty 

it was. Once they have been 

there a while, logs discolour 

a bit, become part of the 

scenery and you stop noticing 

them. But this pile was fresh 

– in fact, not quite finished – 

and summed up so much of 

what living in the country is 

about. This was not a pile of 

logs that had been fed through 

a sawmill and arranged by a 

huge machine. These logs had 

all been individually cut and 

stacked by hand. I complain 

about the dozen or so logs I 

have to fetch from the shed 

of a morning, but the thought 

of shifting that lot over the 

course of a few days makes 

my arms hurt just thinking 

about it! He’s no spring 

chicken either – they build 

them tough out here!! 

We seem to be attracting 

more and more French 

readers, which is fantastic, 

and this month we have our 

first ever French winner of 

the Caption Competition! It 

is hard enough to be funny 

in your own language, but to 

do so in a second language is 

very impressive. I have heard 

it said before that the last part 

of a language that you learn, 

long after you are fluent, is 

humour. My French is good, 

but not good enough to be 

able to confirm this statement, 

but I suspect it to be true as I 

have yet to make a funny joke 

in French. That said, plenty of 

people will say I’m yet make 

one in English either!!

Limoges luxury shoemaker 

closes fake Chinese factory 

The famous Limoges 

shoemaker, J.M. 

Weston has won a 

significant victory in its fight 

against counterfeit shoes as 

a Chinese factory churning 

out cheap knock-offs of this 

luxury brand has been forced 

to close. The news will come 

as a boost to the company’s 

350 employees in an ongoing 

battle against cheap imitations. 

The celebrated shoes of J.M. 

Weston have been leaving the 

factory in Limoges since 1891, 

but in recent months suspect 

consignments have been 

stopped in Germany and France 

destined for the European 

market. The fake shoes are not 

typically styles that J.M. Weston 

produce, but are stamped with 

the company’s mark. 

The closure follows a 

long investigation by J.M. 

Weston’s holding company 

in collaboration with Chinese 

authorities. The Chinese 

factory had been producing 

300 pairs of rip-off shoes a 

day; 3,700 pairs, as well as 

the all-important moulds from 

which they are made, were 

seized in the operation, which 

local authorities have said 

will now result in a criminal 

investigation in China. 

“We have stopped one 

source, but it is possible that 

others still exist”, said Jean- 

Luc Espla, the man who led 

the investigation for the shoe 

manufacturer. 

Denis Lemercier, general 

secretary of Weston said, 

“Counterfeiting is something 

that has kept us busy on 

a permanent basis. It is a 

phenomenon that has gained 

prevalence in recent years.” ■ 

Creuse's stellar communes 

Who hasn’t looked 

up late at night and 

marvelled at how 

clear the night skies can be in 

this part of the word Rural 

France, with its low levels of 

both industrial pollution and 

light pollution, is a stargazer’s 

dream. Look up into the sky 

on a clear night and the sheer 

number of stars on display can 

be hypnotic. 

And now, thanks to the 

work of ANPCEN (National 

Association for the Protection 

of the Sky and Night 

Environment), communes 

across France are being given 

a ‘star’ rating (ranging from ½ 

star to 5 stars) for the quality 

of their midnight views 

under their “Villes et Villages 

étoilés” initiative. 

In January of this year, 64 

communes were recognised 

under this scheme and amongst 

those are four from the Creuse: 

Montaigut-le-Blanc and St- 

Sulpice-le-Guérétois (both 1/2 

*); St-Georges-Nigremont (1 

Château de la Cazine looks to the future

new owners of the château 

are specialists in tourist 

investments and have

big plans for their latest 

venture. 

These plans will come 

in several phases. First 

of all, there will be the 

creation of a 5-star hotel 

and restaurant and the 

new team are already on 

the lookout for a suitable 

French chef. In the final 

days of the restaurant’s 

most recent incarnation, 

the prices were seen as 

being too high and this is 

something that the new 

owners intend to address. 

Eventually, as the various 

projects progress, there 

will be several restaurants 

in the grounds and the main 

restaurant may well start to 

cater to a more elite diner. 

Phase two will see the 

construction of a number 

of stone holiday homes in 

the grounds of the château 

along with an activity park, 

deluxe spa and indoor 

swimming pool and a 

9-hole golf course. The

Saint-Léger has only 100 

lights in the commune and 

these are turned off after 10 

pm, accounting for its high 

rating. Were it not for the 2

commune could have received

not so long ago that we applied 

for a grant to install those two

Public lighting accounts 

for a massive 48% of most 

communes’ energy bills and 

the light ‘halo’ in the distance 

that hovers over large towns 

and cities greatly reduces the 

number of stars that can be 

seen. ■

Electric vehicles come to the 

Limousin as La Poste goes green 

Postal workers in 

Limoges have 

become the first 

in the Limousin 

to be equipped with 

electric vehicles to do their 

rounds. As we reported in 

December’s edition of The 

Bugle, La Poste is in the 

process of a campaign to 

reduce its carbon footprint. 

This will eventually 

involve the introduction of 

10,000 electric vehicles, a 

significant proportion of 

its estimated 60,000-strong 

fleet. 

La Poste, the French postal 

service that was established 

in 1576, is the oldest mail 

delivery company in the 

world and is one of France’s 

largest employers. 

The electric cars are part 

of La Poste’s pledge to 

reduce its carbon emissions 

by 15% by 2012 but are 

also a cost-saving measure 

– the company’s fuel bill 

currently tops €100 million 

every year. 

The new cars can travel up 

to 50 km at any one time and 

a full charge takes between 

3 and 4 hours on a standard 

electricity point. 

So what is the verdict 

A man from Couzeix, 

Haute-Vienne, has died 

whilst attempting to open 

an old chest with an anglegrinder. 

The box - which 

police do not think had been 

opened since the 1960s - 

contained gunpowder and 

various weapons, all of 

which exploded violently, 

killing the 50-year-old man 

and seriously injuring his 

51-year-old partner. 

Investigators believe that 

the local business owner 

was trying to open the 

old chest, for which he no 

longer had a key, simply to

Jules Verne 

Internet search engine Google 

dedicated the image on its home 

page to the French-born science 

fiction writer Jules Verne on 

8 th February to mark the 183 rd 

anniversary of his birth. 

The image used the portholes of 

a submarine, drawing inspiration 

from Verne's most famous work, 

Twenty Thousand Leagues under 

the Sea. 

Jules Verne wrote about space, 

air and underwater travel before 

these forms of transport even 

existed and to this day remains 

the third most translated author in 

history. His other famous works 

include A Journey to the Center of 

the Earth and Around the World in 

Eighty Days. 

M&S returns to France 

British retailer Marks and 

Spencer’s plans to re-enter 

the European market (see 

December’s edition of The Bugle) 

are gaining momentum with the 

news that they will be opening a 

store in Paris later this year. 

According to La Tribune 

newspaper, the group will be 

taking over a 1,400m² store on 

the Champs Elysées currently 

occupied by clothing company 

Esprit. It is being claimed that 

Esprit staff were informed of the 

change recently, and told that they 

will be taken on by M&S when it 

opens. M&S management refused 

to comment on what it called 

“rumour and speculation regarding 

stores”. 

Marc Bolland, M&S's chief 

executive, said late last year: 

“While we have 337 stores in 

41 territories overseas, we are 

essentially a UK retailer that 

exports. We have an opportunity 

to move on from this and become 

a more international retailer, 

reducing our dependency on the 

UK economic cycle.” 

M&S's European shops traded 

successfully in the 1980s and 

1990s and by 1997 its overseas 

stores were generating £38 

million in profits. By 2000, 

however, the division was making 

a £6.1 million loss, and in the 

first half of 2001 this loss had 

widened to £10.8m; the company 

subsequently announced the 

closure of all 38 of its Continental 

stores with the loss of 3,350 

jobs. The move is considered the 

biggest strategic blunder in the 

company’s history. ■ 

Loi Evin 

relaxed for 

works of art 

and culture 

The French government has 

introduced an amendment to 

the loi Evin – a law introduced 

in 1991 to restrict alcohol and 

tobacco advertising – in order to 

protect works of art from being 

subjected to it. 

Under the Evin Law it is illegal 

to feature favourable images 

of smoking in advertising, but 

the legislation has led to what 

critics call “certain caricatured 

interpretations”. Most famous 

among these is the campaign by 

advertising company Métrobus 

that sparked a national debate 

when they airbrushed out the 

trademark pipe of celebrated 

film-maker Jacques Tati and 

replaced it with a brightly 

coloured windmill on posters 

it designed to advertise an 

exhibition dedicated to Tati’s 

work. 

Another instance concerned 

Jean-Paul Sartre who had 

his cigarette removed from 

a catalogue for an exhibition 

marking the 100th anniversary of 

the French National Lottery. 

Many politicians and members 

of the public were outraged at 

what they saw as “falsifying” 

history through “acts of 

censorship” and campaigned for 

the law change. 

Anti-smoking groups 

immediately denounced the 

change as a “dangerous breech” 

of the Evin Law and called it an 

“obvious manoeuvre” by tobacco 

companies.

Threeyear-olds 

to 

be taught 

English at 

school 

President Sarkozy has angered 

France’s linguistic purists by 

suggesting that English should be 

taught in French schools to threeyear-olds. 

Last year he declared 

that all French secondary 

schoolchildren should be at 

least bilingual, a move which 

led to English and other foreign 

languages being introduced from 

the age of seven. 

This month, Luc Chatel, 

France’s education minister, 

said immersion should start even 

earlier, as it made no sense to 

resist the rise of English. “Not 

mastering English in France 

these days is a handicap,” he said, 

adding that teaching methods 

should be modernised to include 

computer use and more student 

exchanges. 

Critics attacked the 

announcement as a fig leaf to 

hide the fact that Mr Sarkozy's 

reforms will see an estimated 

1,000 language teachers lose their 

jobs this year. The government 

wants to move towards more 

online learning in schools. 

According to the Le Monde 

newspaper, educationalists are 

sceptical about using computers 

for language learning from such 

a young age. “Putting threeyear-olds 

in front of computers” 

asked Christian Chevalier, 

general secretary of the SE- 

Unsa teachers' union. “We are 

not opposed to developments 

in teaching that are useful. But 

you need a human to impart 

knowledge. Only a high-quality 

teacher who can speak English 

can teach the language.” 

Ryanair flexes its muscles in Pau 

The Pau chamber of 

commerce has accused 

Ryanair of “financial 

blackmail” following a 

row over subsidies that the airport 

currently pays to the low-cost 

airline. Ryanair routinely charges 

smaller airports a ‘marketing aid’ 

fee to cover the cost of promoting 

its routes. 

The budget airline currently 

charges the small airport in the 

south of France €1.4 million per 

year to continue its services to 

Paris, Brussels and London, but 

it is understood that Ryanair told 

the local chamber that it wanted 

an additional €100,000 per annum 

when its current agreement expires 

in April. 

The airline has been flying to 

Pau since 2003 and is understood 

to have carried 120,000 passengers 

in and out of the city's airport in 

2010. 

Chamber of commerce official 

Christian Cloux informed Ryanair 

of its decision “not to pay another 

penny in fees”, claiming that “the 

situation had become intolerable”.

President Sarkozy has publicly declared that 

multiculturalism has failed in France, a statement that has 

been echoed by leaders around the world in recent months. 

“We have been too concerned about the identity of 

the person who was arriving and not enough about the 

identity of the country that was receiving him,” he said in 

a television interview in which he declared the concept a 

“failure”. 

Prime Minister David Cameron last month echoed this 

sentiment in the UK, calling for better integration of young 

Muslims to combat home-grown extremism. 

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Spanish 

prime minister José María Aznar and Australia's former 

prime minister John Howard have also all recently said 

that their countries’ multicultural policies have failed to 

successfully integrate immigrants.

The spat came as Ryanair also

the airline. It will now close 18 of 

the 64 routes and reduce frequencies 

on 17 others, resulting in the loss of 

over 100 weekly flights. 

In January of this year, Ryanair 

pulled out of Marseille after being 

charged by French prosecutors under 

local labour laws (the company was 

seen to be using ‘cheaper’ Irish 

contracts for staff based in France 

- see last month’s edition of The 

Bugle), but has since reopened most 

of the dropped routes. The company 

said it would get around the court 

ruling by not basing its planes in 

Marseille on a permanent basis and 

by regularly changing the pilots and 

aircrew working on the reopened 

routes. 

For many smaller airports around 

France, the loss of low-cost airline 

routes would be devastating for the 

local economy, but in the current 

financial climate they are struggling 

to meet the ‘subsidies’ being charged 

by Ryanair to maintain them. ■

racist comments 

A 

controversial French 

journalist has been 

convicted of incitement 

to racial hatred after telling a TV 

chat show that drug dealers were 

mostly “blacks and Arabs”. 

Éric Zemmour, a columnist for 

Le Figaro who prides himself 

on his refusal to bow down to 

political correctness made his 

comments during a debate on 

the excessive use of stop-andsearch 

powers being employed 

by the police against minority 

groups. “But why are they 

stopped 17 times Why” he 

told viewers. “Because most 

dealers are blacks and Arabs. 

That's a fact.” 

In reality there are no statistics 

on the ethnicity of criminals 

in France. Under French law, 

everyone is equal and it is 

illegal to gather statistics on 

ethnicity or race and crime; the 

constitution is ‘blind’ to race or 

religion. 

Zemmour was also fined for 

telling another TV channel that 

employers “had a right” to turn 

down black or Arab candidates.

Zemmour told the court he 

was not a “provocateur” but 

rather a faithful observer of 

reality who refused political

of speech gave him the right to 

express his views. He claimed 

that in the second instance 

he was misquoted, but stood 

by his comments about drug 

dealers. The case had attracted 

considerable publicity, with 

many senior journalists 

and media figures backing 

journalists’ rights to freedom of 

expression. 

The court, however, ruled 

that he had “gone beyond the 

permitted limits of freedom of 

expression” in his comments 

on the programme on Canal+, 

giving him a suspended 

€2,000 fine and ordering him 

to pay damages to the antidiscrimination 

groups that had 

brought the case against him. ■ 

Ban on same-sex marriages 

upheld by constitutional court 

France is a country 

that prides itself 

on its human rights 

record and its 

national motto of “Liberté, 

Egalité, Fraternité” (liberty, 

equality, and fraternity). But 

it seems that this principle 

will not be extended to 

gay couples following 

a ruling by the Conseil 

Constitutionnel (France’s 

highest constitutional 

authority). 

A lesbian couple, 

Corrine Cestino and Sophie 

Hasslauer, had challenged 

the ban on gay marriages 

in France, but the Conseil 

Constitutionnel has ruled 

this month that the ban is 

in fact in keeping with the 

constitution. The ruling has 

come as a blow to gay rights 

campaigners, who had

The colour photos, which 

feature diseased teeth and 

cancer-damaged lungs, must

tax benefits, but for many 

people this civil union pales 

in comparison to a ‘real’ 

marriage. “Marriage is the 

only solution in terms of 

protecting our children, 

sharing parental authority, 

settling inheritance 

problems and eventual 

custody if one of us were 

to die,” the couple told 

AFP news agency, adding, 

“It is not so much about 

getting married but about 

having the right to get 

married. So, that is what 

we are asking for: just to 

be able, like anyone else, 

to choose to get married or 

not.” 

Gay rights activist, Laura 

Petersell, told FRANCE 

24, “There’s absolutely 

no reason why we should 

continually be denied the 

right. It’s not a favour, a 

present, a privilege – it’s a 

fundamental and universal 

right.” 

A recent opinion poll 

suggests that most French 

people are in favour of 

recognising gay marriages, 

with only 35% opposed. 

However, the idea that 

the court should rule at 

all on gay marriage was 

condemned by the new 

leader of France's far-right 

National Front, Marine Le 

Pen. She said she believed 

that most homosexuals did 

not want the right to marry 

either: “The vast majority 

of homosexuals are not 

demanding the right to be 

different but the right to be 

left alone.” 

A study carried out by 

the National Institute of 

Demographic Studies 

(INED) estimated in 2009 

that some 24,000 to 40,000 

French children live with 

gay parents. ■ 

Shock tactics in war on tobacco 

in 20 other countries around 

the world. 

A study financed by 

France’s national cancer 

institute, INCA, concluded 

that “images seem to be more 

a more efficient way of getting 

through to people than words”. 

Predictably, the tobacco 

industry does not agree with 

these findings, claiming that 

the images may even be 

counterproductive, citing 

anecdotal evidence from 

Canada and Australia where 

they claim teenagers are 

collecting the different photos 

to complete the gruesome set. 

In countries that already 

use the photos on cigarette 

packaging, none have reported 

an increase in teenage 

smoking. In Canada for 

example, only 15% of 15- to 

19-year olds smoke regularly, 

whereas in France 33% of 

17-year-olds smoke. 

Joseph Osman, director of 

France’s anti-tobacco agency 

has defended the graphic 

nature of the images, claiming 

that 66,000 deaths per year 

from smoking-related illnesses 

are far more disturbing. 

“These photos aren’t aimed 

at any particular segment of 

the public and their use will 

probably not lead to a 20% 

drop in tobacco sales,” he said. 

“But the fact that France has 

13.5 million smokers means 

that we need to increase 

the number of dissuasive 

measures.” ■

before have so many properties

such a short period of time. 

“Houses on Internet” is an 

internet marketing company that 

helps private owners of French 

property sell their house without 

using an estate agent. They operate 

throughout France with about 50 

local representatives and market the 

properties worldwide with state-ofthe-art 

internet techniques. 

“It really started getting quite 

busy in December”, Richard says. 

“A lot of viewings were planned, but 

many of them were cancelled too, as 

people did not want to risk getting

that we spent even more than usual 

on global advertising during the last 

couple of months of 2010, which 

almost immediately resulted in more 

visitors to our website: 80 to 90,000 

a month. That could of course be 

one of the reasons, as the buyers 

are coming from many different 

countries.”

Experienced builder Dave 

Cardwell has been based in the 

Limousin for 3 years and is able 

to offer a complete building 

package from planning right 

through to the finishing touches. 

Along with his 15 years’ experience as 

a professional builder in the UK, Dave 

Cardwell has an HNC and ONC in building 

and engineering and is able to oversee 

building projects from the design phase all 

the way to completion. As part of his dayto-day 

work, Dave regularly undertakes 

groundworks, block and brick work, 

roofing, plastering, stud work and tiling 

to name but a few. He can also assist with 

arranging the necessary building permits 

and can even help to set up appointments 

with your local Mairie. 

As well as covering all the traditional 

aspects of building, Dave also regularly 

works with wood to produce high quality 

doors and shutters, amongst other things. 

He even produces a range of hand-made 

chicken coops that are custom-built to 

order and which can be yours for as little as 

€160 (see below right), as well as kennels 

and sheds! 

Thanks to a collaboration with Dennis 

Fry of Dennis Fry Timber Services, 

Dave is also able to deliver large timberbased 

projects such as stables. Together 

they have built a number of stable yards, 

taking projects from a greenfield site right 

through to the end product including all 

groundworks and construction of the 

stables and ménages themselves. Having 

worked for a concrete/marble company in 

the UK, Dave is able to lay the concrete 

bases for large projects such as these (see 

far right for an example).

Les Hérolles - France's largest street market 

Bugle reader, Andrew Wignall, shares with us his 

love for the local street market in Les Hérolles - it 

might not be cheap, but that's not always the point. 

With the 

r e p e a t s , 

reruns, the 

box set and 

the initial series itself it’s 

easy to imagine it possible 

to have viewed Friends 

constantly for four hundred 

years (at least). Thankfully 

that’s not the case. However, 

should you be a vampire or 

some other kind of ‘undead’ 

then it’s quite feasible that 

for the last four centuries 

you’ve been able to spend 

the 29 th day of each month 

visiting what is reputedly 

the largest open air market 

in France. Now, I know what 

you’re thinking. Unless it’s 

held after sundown vampires 

would find the day out 

something of a risk and I’m 

also attempting to be quoted 

in Private Eye as writing the 

most ludicrous intro ever, 

but Les Hérolles Market 

really is something worth 

knowing about. 

Drive through Les 

Hérolles on any other day 

of the month and it’s like a 

ghost town with empty wide 

lanes and a couple of bars 

which seem hard set and 

determined in not placing 

the ‘open’ sign on the 

door. It’s simply a village 

to pass through on the 

way to elsewhere. Market 

Day is the day when the 

world wakes up and sends 

a delegation of thousands 

to pass by the stalls and 

point at how ludicrously 

expensive things appear to 

be. And believe me, things 

are expensive. But more 

of that later. The sheer 

throng of humanity has an 

exhilaration all of its own. 

Listen closely and there are 

all kinds of nationalities 

nipping at the ear: German, 

Jamaican, English, Dutch 

and if you listen really 

closely, then you might even 

hear some Français. 

So what can you buy The 

simple answer is everything, 

whether you need it or not. 

Who needs a complete set 

of Belgian Army fatigues… 

camouflage trousers, shirt, 

jacket and beret Not me. 

But I have the lot hung up in 

the back bedroom. Why did I 

do that That’s Les Hérolles 

for you. It’s an occasion, a 

day out, a step into history 

where it’s a shame to leave 

with nothing because you’re 

a part of the general mêlée. 

The several stalls offering 

50c glasses of red, white, 

rosé and mulled which seem 

to tug at the collar after 

every third stall also help 

to cloud rational judgement. 

But who cares There’s even 

what could be described as 

a small petting zoo for the 

kids with horses, miniature 

ponies and sheep all up for 

sale and on display. On my 

first visit I was alarmed at 

having to make way for a 

man tugging a goat along 

behind him on a lead. 

Now we get back to the 

prices. Bargains are few 

and far between. And when 

I say few and far between 

what I actually mean is 

that there are none. Of 

course you can barter and 

haggle but even with a few 

euros off the asking price 

you’re still getting fleeced 

(ironic if you’re attempting 

to actually buy a fleece). 

But here I go again. Who 

cares Don’t go for the 

bargain. Go for the day. 

Go for the experience. The 

place has the whole works. 

From sandals to saddles, 

cardigans to carrots, 

chainsaws to chickens and 

ponchos to pans. In fact, if 

it’s alliteration you’re after 

then Les Hérolles really is a 

marvellous market. 

And I almost forgot 

Johnny Hallyday, the 

legend, the one and only, 

the man himself, the French 

Elvis. I’m not a big fan, I 

must admit, but if you are 

then this market is the place 

to be, particularly if you 

like to praise him in the 

form of wearing a T-shirt 

with his face emblazoned 

across the chest. Seek out 

the shirt stalls (and there are 

many) to see that for every 

one AC/DC or Iron Maiden 

logo there are at least six for 

King Johnny. Even if this 

master of Gaelic croon is not 

your cup of tea then at least 

treat yourself to an emblem 

of a white unicorn leaping 

through a waterfall (or over 

a rainbow). Presumably 

owning one of these is 

considered obligatory over 

here. Maybe for tax reasons. 

So that’s it. For a day in 

the crowd, a day to point 

and stare, a day to realise 

that Primark is the cheapest 

retailer on earth and a day 

to truly experience a piece 

of French history then Les 

Hérolles really is a must.

In the garden: jobs for March 

Gardening 

In the first of a new series, Michelle Pierce from independent 

nursery Un Jardin en France tells us what we should 

be thinking about planting in March and reminds us what we 

need to be doing to get our gardens in shape for summer. 

The days are getting 

longer and the clock's 

ticking! Now is the time 

to get the garden off 

to a good start, even though the 

weather can be unpredictable, and 

the frosts are not yet over. So dust 

off your wellies and read on... 

Getting off to a good start 

In the potager: To dig or not to 

dig, that is the question. 

If you dig, then get those boots on 

and pick up that spade. Remember 

to do a few warm-up exercises 

before you start to reduce the risk 

of pulling a muscle. That goes for 

people who are using rotavators 

too. If you covered your beds in 

the autumn with weed suppressant, 

then the hard work should have 

been done for you by the worms, 

and all you have to do is peel it 

back and sow. 

Elsewhere: 

Lightly hoe beds before giving 

them a layer of compost or aged 

manure. Shrubs, trees and roses 

especially will love a good feed. 

An alternative, which is easier on 

the back, is to use pelleted chicken 

or cow manure, simply sprinkled 

on the surface of the soil. Not 

quite as effective on light, sandy 

soils, but still beneficial. 

Sowing seed 

It's much more economical to 

grow your own veg plants from 

seed than to buy them in, unless 

you only want, say, a couple of 

aubergine plants. If you've got 

a greenhouse, poly-tunnel or 

sunny windowsills, sow veg and 

flowers into good quality compost. 

Modules are more useful than seed 

trays because you won't need to 

do any pricking out. Outside, you 

can sow direct if the soil is warm 

enough (roughly 8°C). If it's not, 

or your soil is cold and wet, put 

down plastic, fleece or cloches 

to warm it up. Peas, broad beans, 

leeks, spinach, radishes and 

cabbages can be sown direct. It's 

now or never for sweet peas, if 

you didn't sow them last autumn. 

Under fleece sow carrots, kales, 

rocket, chard, beetroot, parsley 

(slow germinating), borage and 

other annual herbs, sorrel, mizuna 

and flowers. It's well worth making 

a plan of what you want to sow to 

see how you can plant according 

to companion planting - it really 

works. Note: French people still 

sow according to « la lune », the 

moon. There's lots of info about 

this, but if you want to simplify 

things, try sowing 2 days before a 

full moon. 

Les orties / Nettles 

The first crop of spring nettles 

always looks so fantastic - lush, 

green and vibrant. Not only do 

they make good soup, and are 

an important food source for 

butterflies, but they'll also give 

you an excellent free fertiliser. 

You can make nettle tea by 

steeping the cut nettle tops in a tub 

of water (with a lid to avoid the 

smell) until they stop fermenting. 

Remember to dilute it 1:10 and 

then use as a liquid feed. You can 

also use chopped nettles under 

greedy feeders like tomatoes, 

runner beans, aubergines etc, just 

by putting some in the bottom of 

the planting hole. 

Top tips: 

• have your mower serviced 

before the rush 

• sow a row of blue flowered 

linen all around the potager to 

deter Colorado beetle 

• for prettier salads, mix two or 

three packets of radish together 

and sow the mix ■

Pepper Steak 

Ingredients (Serves 4): 

Food and Drink 

60ml Black peppercorns 

90ml/6 tbsp Brandy 

4 Sirloin or Fillet steaks, thick 225g/8oz 300ml/1/2 pint Cream 

30g/2 tbsp Butter 2 Garlic cloves, finely chopped 

20ml/4 tsp Vegetable oil 

Salt 

1. Place the peppercorns in a freezer bag and crush them with a rolling pin or the base of a heavy pan until they are medium 

coarse. 

2. Trim any extra fat from the steaks and press the peppercorns on to both sides, coating them completely. 

3. Melt the butter with the oil in a heavy based frying pan over a medium to high heat. Add the steaks and cook for 7 to 8 

minutes, turning once until done as preferred (for rare steak if you press your first finger into the pad of your thumb that is 

the bounce you need, for medium use the second finger, and for well done the third). Transfer the steaks to a warm plate and 

cover to keep warm - this allows the steak to relax. 

4. Pour the brandy into the pan to deglaze it. Allow to boil until reduced by half, scraping all the bits from the bottom of the pan. Then add the garlic and the cream and heat for a few 

minutes until the cream has reduced by about 1/3. Now stir any juices from the steaks into the sauce, season to taste, pour sauce over the steaks and serve with a garnish of your choice.

Compost - a guide to home composting 

It appears that there 

are some of you out 

there that really read 

my thoughts on the 

environment, and even 

some who write to poor old 

Steve and ask for articles on 

certain topics. So, in response 

to one such request, this month 

I’m going to talk compost 

(there probably is a pun there, 

but I’ll leave that up to you). 

Compost is basically the 

equivalent of the good stuff 

in soil (humus) that sustains 

plant life. It helps the soil 

retain moisture, assists with the 

formation of good soil structure 

and provides nutrients. 

So much of what we send to 

landfill consists of vegetation 

that could be used in our 

garden. Around 100 kilos of 

vegetable waste is thrown 

out by each family, each year. 

Multiply that by millions of 

families and that's a lot of 

waste that has to be moved. 

By setting up your own 

compost heap you'll not only 

be helping your garden, you'll 

be helping the planet in other 

ways. 

Composting seems to be such 

a simple concept: throw stuff 

in a pile and let it break down 

thanks to bacteria and other 

bugs. But nature works some 

amazing and complex magic 

for this to happen. Nature never 

ceases to leave me in awe, even 

when it comes to how it deals 

with its own waste. 

When we hear the term 

“bacteria” we often associate 

it with nasty stuff, but bacteria 

are essential to our health and 

the well-being of our planet. 

For example, without certain 

bacteria in our digestive system 

we wouldn't be able to process 

food properly and would 

become quite ill. 

There are three different 

groups of bacteria that are 

involved in the composting 

process and each successive 

group relies upon the prior one 

in order to do their work most 

effectively. 

Psychrophilic bacteria 

These are the “starter 

bacteria” that go to work on 

cold compost. They are most 

active in temperatures of 13°C 

(55°F), but will also work 

down to an incredible -17°C 

(0°F). As these bacteria chomp 

on organic materials they also 

generate a small amount of 

heat, creating an environment 

suitable for the next group. 

Mesophilic bacteria 

These work in temperatures 

from 21°C - 32°C (approx. 

70°F - 90°F), decomposing 

both vegetable and animal 

matter. Their exertions produce 

enough heat for the next type of 

bacteria. 

Thermophilic bacteria 

These are the powerhouses 

of the bacteria world, working 

fast in a temperature range 

of 40°C - 77°C (104°F to 

170°F), but some will also still 

thrive past the boiling point of 

water! These are the guys that 

can cause a compost pile to 

spontaneously combust if the 

pile is too high or too dry. 

These three groups join 

forces to turn our waste 

into rich humus capable of 

sustaining plant life, but they 

are also assisted by other 

organisms such as fungi, and 

various insects and worms. 

Quick composting tips 

By providing the best 

conditions possible, the 

composting process can be 

made to happen much faster 

than it does in normal natural 

conditions. Whereas everything 

just thrown in a pile may take 

a year or two to break down, 

intensive composting can be 

completed in just a couple of 

months. 

Here are some simple things 

you can do for more effective 

composting: 

- It's important to get the right 

mix of carbon and nitrogen 

materials in a compost heap. 

The carbon based stuff is 

mainly dry (things like 

newspaper, straw and dry 

cuttings). The items rich in 

nitrogen will mostly be wet 

(vegetable scraps and lawn 

clippings). Ideal conditions are 

said to be one part wet/green to 

25 parts dry/brown. You don't 

have to be this fussy, but an 

overly dry compost heap will 

take ages to break down (been 

there) and one too wet will start 

to smell (been there too). It 

does take a bit of practice and 

a watchful eye. 

- Care needs to be taken when 

adding lawn clippings. These 

are usually very moist and 

rich in nitrogen. As they are 

so wet, they'll clump together, 

dispelling the oxygen needed 

by the aerobic bacteria and the 

pile will get quite smelly - a 

strong ammonia type whiff due 

to anaerobic decomposition. 

It's best to mix clippings in 

thoroughly with the pile, or 

spread the lawn clippings out 

for a few days to dry a little and 

then add them. 

- Select a well drained area to 

establish your pile, preferably 

over soil so that worms can 

access it. The compost pile 

should be in a sunny position in 

colder climates or a shady area 

in warm climates. 

- A three-sided pen will help to 

keep your pile tidy. This can 

be made from strong mesh or 

pallets nailed together. 

- To speed up composting, 

break down materials into 

smaller pieces or shred them 

and turn the pile regularly. 

- The pile should always be 

warm or hot; if you dig a small 

hole into the pile and put your 

hand near it, you should feel 

it being warmer than the air 

temperature. If it's cold, you 

need to add more green stuff.

- The pile should always be 

moist, but not dripping. If it's 

dry, spray water on the pile and 

then work it through. 

If you're thinking of getting into 

composting in a big way, there 

are all sorts of tools available 

such as bins set in frames with 

a handle for turning. A multiple 

bin/pile system is also useful so 

you can stop with one pile at a 

certain point and let that totally 

decompose while adding fresh 

stuff to a new pile. 

Things you can add to 

compost piles: 

Newspaper, cardboard, 

eggshells, vegetable scraps, 

lawn clippings, hair, manure 

from herbivores, leaves, 

sawdust, coffee grounds and 

filters, tea leaves - basically 

any plant material that's not too 

thick. 

Things to avoid: 

Dog and cat droppings, fish, 

meat and dairy products, weeds, 

grease and oil. The reason 

for avoiding most of these is 

that there is a disease risk and 

rodents and other animals may 

be attracted.

about various approaches and 

equipment.

St Patrick - the 

patron saint of Ireland 

Saint Patrick is the 

patron saint of Ireland 

and Irish people 

around the world 

celebrate his saint’s day on 17 th 

March every year. It is a public 

holiday in both the Republic of 

Ireland and Northern Ireland. 

Who was Saint Patrick 

St. Patrick was born in 

Britain in the late 4 th century 

to a wealthy Christian family. 

When he was 16, a raiding 

party from Ireland attacked 

his father’s estate. Patrick was 

kidnapped and taken to Ireland, 

which at the time was a land 

of paganism. Patrick spent six 

years as a slave, working as a 

shepherd and during this time 

he learned Gaelic, the Irish 

language, and also became a 

devout Christian. 

After six years, Patrick heard 

a voice telling him it was time 

to escape, so he travelled south

In order to make the people 

understand the idea of the 

Holy Trinity - the Father, the 

Son, and the Holy Spirit - 

Saint Patrick used a shamrock. 

Shamrocks are native to Ireland 

and they were already a sacred 

plant because they represented 

the arrival of spring. Patrick 

showed that the three leaves of a 

shamrock were all on one stem, 

in the same way that the Father, 

the Son and the Holy Spirit 

make up one God. Shamrocks 

have been associated with Saint 

Patrick ever since. 

Why March 17 th 

After nearly 30 years in 

Ireland converting the people 

to Christianity, Patrick died on 

17 th March 461 A.D. 

Legends of Saint Patrick 

The most famous legend 

about Saint Patrick is that 

he drove snakes and all 

venomous creatures from 

Ireland by banging a drum. If 

any poisonous creatures ever 

returned to Ireland, they would 

instantly die. However, this 

legend is probably a metaphor 

for driving the pagans out of 

Ireland and converting them to 

Christianity - snakes were often 

associated with pagan worship. 

In fact, there have probably 

never been any snakes in 

Ireland! ■

The Bugle has teamed up with France Bleu 

Creuse to bring you a monthly bilingual radio 

slot as part of the station's regular show Assiette 

Anglaise, broadcast Monday to Friday every 

week at 10:45 am on 94.3 FM. 

English Plate, as it translates literally, 

offers a light-hearted look at everyday English 

expressions and phrases and considers what 

the equivalent might be in French. Our slot is 

broadcast just before the Assiette Anglaise, in

when he says it's not worth getting 

hot under the collar if someone 

disagrees with our opinions. 

I couldn't agree more and did try 

to stress last month that Terry is 

perfectly entitled to his opinion. I

On 2nd February I once again visited the 

SPA in Guéret, taking more food and the 

finished duvets, together with a selection of 

new collars, plus collars and leads which had been 

donated with some titbits. 

Kara from the SPA wishes to thank everyone for 

their kindness. More bedding etc has been donated, 

but more is still needed, so keep it coming in. 

In my previous write-up I failed to mention that 

I didn't come away empty-handed. On my first visit 

there I saw a poor little poodle cross, and after Xmas 

my friend and I went to see her and brought her 

home. All the puppies that were there have found 

homes, so if you are looking for a new companion 

the SPA is the place to look. 

Once again a big Thank You to everybody 

involved.

Judging by the ‘assault’ of English words to be seen 

everywhere, there must be an element of the French 

public who see this as the erosion of ‘la vie française’ 

and adopt a defensive stance. I would say that learning 

their ways demonstrates you pose no threat and the 

‘drawbridge’ comes down… but it all takes time.

have never written to a newspaper 

in my entire life, but feel compelled 

to respond to your article and 

Terry Wogan's comments, as I'm sure 

many other readers will do; you'll be 

inundated! 

We moved to our lovely rural 

retreat, just outside a "very French" 

small village, in June 2008. From the 

outset our neighbours were warm and 

welcoming and they have continued 

to be so. We have never felt like 

"incomers" or "foreigners". 

We live here permanently and we 

have a holiday gite, mostly booked by 

Brits. Many Satnav systems direct our 

guests to a neighbouring farmhouse 

and far from being abusive, the owner 

(who speaks no English) rushes out and 

points down the lane in our direction 

with a big smile! Without exception, 

all of our guests have commented that 

whilst driving to and from the village, 

all the locals smile and wave.

Dear Editor 

In October 2001 we 

arrived in France and met 

a French lady living 500 

metres from us. 

We invited her for a drink in 

our house which is on a dead 

end road. To our surprise, a 

week later the potholes in 

our road were filled up and 

the grass growing 30 cm high 

was mowed. 

When we met the lady 

Our near neighbours live in Paris 

and come to their holiday home 

every Easter and August. Knowing 

the preconceived Parisian reputation, 

we awaited their first arrival with a 

little trepidation, which was totally 

unfounded. They, and their extended 

family are charming and we now look 

forward to their arrival each year and 

our drinks parties! 

I think that if you continually 

encounter aggression or standoffishness 

(in any country) you should perhaps 

look inwards and address your own 

attitude towards others. 

Sadly, there have been many 

occasions in local markets and shops 

when I've witnessed the "superior" 

attitude of some misguided Brits and 

I've been ashamed and embarrassed 

to be British. Different countries have 

different cultures and general traits - 

but people are people everywhere - and 

maybe we get back what we give out! 

We love our adopted country and 

have integrated and been welcomed 

into the local community.

The first time we went to 

our local pub, the owneress

two of us get kisses on both 

cheeks. 

I once parked my car on the 

central square of our nearest 

market town, Argentonsur-Creuse, 

and opened the 

door of my car. A lady I had 

not seen had just walked 

past and the door slammed 

against her arm. “Excusezmoi, 

Madame...”, I started, 

but before I could finish my 

sentence she said “Mais non, 

Monsieur, c'est moi” (“You 

will have to excuse me. I 

should not have...” etc.) In 

Holland (I am Dutch) they 

would say “Can't you look out 

of your pods, stupido” 

Another time, we had some 

‘heavy’ garbage to dispose of. 

My wife called the town hall 

and said: “My husband is 83 

years old and our access road 

is too long for me to carry 

the load all the way down 

to the main road, where we 

have to put our rubbish.” 

“No problem, Madame, we 

will collect it from your front 

door.” 

As you said in your article: 

the French go out of their way 

to help you.

The Melting Pot 

We are a group of around 45 members, both French and British, who regularly 

meet and share things and try and integrate with the French community. We 

meet every month in the Ancienne Ecole in Darnac, on a Wed morning from 

10am-12pm, except for the first Wednesday, when we meet in the evening at 

8pm. We hold information meetings, plant swaps, talks and we regularly have 

guest speakers on subjects concerning living in France. In the evening meetings 

we hold quizzes, whist drives and BBQs etc.

CLE is a non-profit organization which helps people to settle into the area

The Harmonics 

This is our 6th season of singing as a group. Our music is varied classical,

The vocal ensemble CRESCENDO is a four-voice choir. Like all

Patient work of breathing, vocal techniques and music theory 

under the direction of Marion Riffle allows everyone to move 

forward together, find unity and proper colour. 

CRESCENDO regularly gives concerts in Limousin with a 

repertoire covering classical and Renaissance period sounds, 

quaint folk songs, as well as works of sacred music. 

The discovery of old scores continues this year with Hildegard of 

Bingen (XII century) and medieval music. What a program!

Jean-Christian Michel is a 

composer and clarinettist and 

one of the world's best musicians. 

His compositions are influenced 

by jazz and by the music of 

Johann Sebastian Bach. He has 

invented a globally unique music 

which fuses the pulsation and 

expressiveness of jazz with the 

golden rules of sacred music in 

rich and coloured harmonies. 

Jean-Christian has sold over 

5 million records, including 

bestsellers “Requiem” and 

“Aranjuez”, and performed 

almost 10,000 concerts around 

the world. Drummer Kenny 

Clarke and pianist John Lewis played and recorded with him for 

years. 

The church of St-Sulpice-les-Feuilles is one of Limousin's most 

beautiful churches. It is a masterpiece of neo-gothic architecture 

whose elegant facade houses a brilliant interior. Many people from 

around the region visit the church to view its treasures: a sculpted 

altar, paintings and a magnificent gold angel reliquary from the 

XIIth century (a replica is on display, the original being held in the 

Limoges art museum). The acoustics of the church are unique as 

well. When filled with the music of Jean-Christian, the result is an 

inspiring, uplifting musical feast for the audience. 

The programme will include arrangements of J.S BACH, 

Aranjuez's Concerto and Jean-Christian Michel's compositions. 

He will be accompanied by Monique Thus, the vibrant Organist of 

Marseilles Cathedral.

There’s a lot of talk in the media these days about whether 

multiculturalism is working in Europe. Well, it certainly is 

in Boussac where the Amitiés Internationales du Pays de 

Boussac is doing its bit to bridge the divide between British 

and French cultures. This association was founded in 2009 to 

help newcomers from abroad integrate into French society. This 

largely takes the form of various activities throughout the year. 

Definite dates for 2011 so far are a summer fete at Lavaufranche 

on 3rd July, Battle of the Bands at the Salle Polyvalente, Boussac 

on 5th November (miss this at your peril!) and a Christmas Carol 

Service at St Anne’s in Boussac on 9th December. AIPB will be 

running cake stalls at various venues during the year too. The 

local French residents have very quickly become addicted to 

British cakes and love the stalls! 

AIPB has a new website. You’ll find it at http://www. 

aipbboussac.fr. Keep checking back regularly to stay in touch 

with what’s going on. 

You can join the AIPB for only 10€ a year for over 18s (free 

for younger persons). This gives you the chance to become 

involved with a lively, active group of French and Anglophone 

people who are positively and imaginatively promoting the 

closer integration of the two cultures. You’ll get free entry into 

all AIPB events, and you can take part in member-only events 

(outings, BBQs etc). You can advertise your business for free on 

the new website too, and take part in the forums which will be up 

and running in the very near future. You can post goods for sale
