2 Editorial Happy Reading Welcome to the long awaited edition of Mishumo, as you all know each household has its ups and downs. The Communication Services is no exception; we have been grappled by challenges that made it difficult for us to publish our external newsletter. We have since put our house in order and we commit to produce the newsletter each quarter of the year. The primary objective of our newsletters is to inform stakeholders about the highlights and challenges of the Department. The Deputy Minister of Public Works, Honourable (DM) Ntopile Kganyago visited the National Youth Service Projects at Sekhukhune District. WE ARE NOT JUST ABOUT BRICK AND MORTAR” – Dept Public Works Contributing to the building of young minds at ECD’s The children of any nation are its future By: Rosemary Mahapa “Invest in a child today and ensure sustained development of the nation tomorrow”, these were the words spoken by MEC for Public Works Machwene Semenya during an initiative by the department, to reach out to young minds at the awareness campaign for Early Childhood Development centres (ECD’s) held in Lephalale. Department officials led by the MEC took time out from building schools and hospitals, to build the capacity of young minds, when they handed over educational toys to five ECD centres at Shongoane stadium. This was part of the Expanded Public Works Programme’s social sector initiative. Head of the social sector, Salome Maphalla, believes that the initiative is a step in the right direction. “The aim of this exercise is to improve children’s capacity to develop and learn through educational toys, as times have changed and new methods of educating are constantly coming into play it becomes critical to always remain relevant” said Maphalla The young learners from William Mapitso, Rankwetshere and Mamina ECD’s received laptops, building blocks; puzzles, dolls, drawing items and many more, which included a custom made kiddies apron, to keep them clean as they play. The apron made a lot of mothers and teachers present, very happy, understandably so. Before kick starting the celebrations by dancing with the children, the MEC took a leaf from O R Tambo’s words and emphasized that “The children of any nation are its future and that a country, a movement and people, that does not value its youth and children does not deserve its future”. Words that were welcomed by 5 year old Kabelo, a learner from William Mapitso crèche, who expressed words of gratitude on behalf of all the children. MEC Semenya concluded by making an appeal to the community to safe guard the children and go back to the spirit of ubuntu and protect every child in all circumstances.
