Richard A.
1960 Altimari adored
science, especially biology, and loved
teaching it. Following more than 40
years as a teacher and superintendent
of schools in California, Dick passed
away Oct. 12 in Rocklin, Calif. He
graduated magna cum laude in
biology and later earned his master’s
at University of Massachusetts, close
to his roots in Northampton. He
continued graduate studies at Harvard
and Amherst and almost pursued a
career in dentistry. Teaching won,
and in 1963 he moved to Los Angeles,
where he taught biology in the city
schools and received his doctorate
from UCLA. Dick moved from
teaching to administration in
Huntington Beach and Petaluma,
eventually retiring in Rocklin.
Following retirement, he went back to
teaching, as an instructor for Chapman
University in teacher certification
classes. Active in Kiwanis, Dick also
had an abiding interest in antiques
and became a dealer, perhaps
influenced by success in buying
used furniture for the suite he
shared in the Delta Tau Delta
house with Larry Knudsen and
Ron Geesey ’61. While working at
Spring Lake, N.J., Dick met Janey,
and they were married in 1964.
She survives him.
Morris Mengel came to Lafayette
from Nazareth, Pa. As the biggest
player and tackle for the Leopard 11,
Morris was hard not to notice, and, as
fellow lineman Bob Brodie remarks,
“Morris was hard to move.” Today,
after shoulder and hip replacements,
Morris is a member of the local Y’s
Silver Sneakers program, designed for
mild scheduled workouts for seniors.
Retired after an engineering career,
Morris enjoys his two children and two
grandchildren. Son Marc and his wife
program computers for particle
acceleration experiments at Fermi
National Labs outside of Chicago.
Daughter Constance is a decorative
interior painter and completed wall
scenes for two science museums in
Columbus, Ohio, and Lincoln, Neb.
In 2011, Morris and Joanne celebrated
their golden anniversary and completed
construction of their new home in
Montgomery, Ill. Morris builds
furniture and outdoor sheds to order.
Tom Rennert accomplished a
lifetime goal of playing 100 rounds
of golf in a season, concluding the
day after Thanksgiving, and lowered
his handicap by six strokes. Another
goal: shoot his age in golf. Contact:
Fran and Don Nikles and
Doll and Al Siegel organized
a gala tailgating event prior to the
Homecoming game. Attendees
included Wayne and Joanne
Anderson, Phil and Bernice
Bollman, Dick and Colleen Booth,
Bob and Sheila Brodie, Wally ’59
and Dot French, Dave and Doris
Gicking, Jim and Maureen Hurst,
Larry and Sue Knudsen, Tom and
Judy Moyer, Don and Fran, Betsy
(Don) Ohnegian, Alan Runk,
David Saalfrank and wife Carol,
Al and Doll, Don and Dottie
Westmaas, and Bob Zimet.
John Hickman, retired after
a career in civil and structural
engineering as head of Chester &
Associates, was happily settled in his
five wooded acres in Chester County,
Pa., when Hurricane Sandy visited. The
eye passed over his house. John now
contemplates a second career in the
timber business, harvesting fallen trees
while being grateful none hit his house.
Duncan O’Dwyer and wife Alice
have visited 42 countries. Their latest
trip was a month traveling in Russia,
Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania,
and Poland. Back in Rochester, N.Y.,
Duncan is managing partner of his law
firm. Tennis twice a week keeps him
limber, and he planned to again travel
to Lafayette in February to act as a
moot court judge for the regional
competition. If visiting Rochester,
the O’Dwyers offer their hospitality.
The inaugural
1961 lecture of the
International Speaker Series, funded
as the class 50th reunion gift and
held Oct. 24, was enormously
successful. Anne-Marie Slaughter
of Princeton University spoke. Her
lecture, “The Big Picture: Beyond
Hot Spots and Crises in our Interconnected
World,” was interesting
and relevant. A full house at Colton
Chapel applauded the class officers
when they were introduced by event
host Ilan Peleg, Dana Professor of
Government and Law. A lively Q&A
period followed. The evening
concluded with a reception and book
signing in Kirby Hall of Civil Rights.
Prior to the lecture, class officers
Joe Nyce, Ed Auble, Ron Geesey,
Dick Webster and I (Doug Hobby),
were invited to the dinner held in the
Founders Room for Professor
Slaughter. Given the success of the
event, please consider allocating a
portion of your annual giving to the
College Class of 1961 ISS Fund.
