Dieu Khuong-Huu intends to
publish his memoirs. Upon disembarking
in the States in 1975, Dieu and
wife Marie, both Vietnamese nationals,
were detained at Camp Pendleton in
California. Their detention became the
focus of a story on Vietnamese refugees
in The Washington Post in 1975. Dick
Wilson (aka Dick Batistic) read the
story and recalled waiting on tables in
Watson Hall with a student of the same
name. After confirming this, Dick and
wife Celia began a campaign to facilitate
the Khuong-Huus’ release. Ultimately,
the commandant of the Marine Corps
personally mandated the release. In
addition to helping the Khuong-Huus,
Dick and Celia have remained
consistent benefactors of Lafayette.
Lee Kane and wife Carol attended
Homecoming, along with other Phi
Delts: Bud Jost, who is soon to receive
a new heart valve; Jake Hannemann
and Jude; Dick Faust and Deloris,
who recovered from knee replacement
surgery; Norm Riley and
Linda; Art and Anne Herrmann;
Gordy Brown ’57 and Delia, Skip
Ellison ’57 and Mary, and their
football teammate Joe Bozik ’58
and Peg Marcin, along with Bill
Kurtz ’58 and Lucille. Phi Delt Dr.
Russ Wells ’59 was a welcome
brother. Phi Delt chef Aldo
Costantino and his granddaughter
joined them for brunch. Doug Horst
continues to suffer with cancer.
Kit Green notes Howie
Fredericks and Sandra are now in
their rebuilt home after a fire. Kit ran
into Bob Moss ’57 and George
Tiger ’57 and has been in touch with
Tarz Hewitt and Sandy Smith, who
is doing better. Kit also ran into Saul
Cooperman and Janet at the 60th
reunion of West Orange (N.J.) High
School Class of 1952. Saul writes and
offers public service.
This columnist
1957 (Glenn Grube)
and Bob Moss received recognition
during the 55th reunion. My award
was for being a longtime correspondent
who has been faithful and prompt in
submitting positive, upbeat columns.
Bob’s was for leading the class in
achieving the highest Annual Fund
total for all reunion classes. Bob
should also receive recognition for
keeping the class always near the top
of giving for all classes. The class
missed having the highest percentage
of givers by a single percentage point,
as 109 members of the class (72%) were
donors in 2012. Carl Allspaw sent me
a thank you about the award, as did
Gordie Brown and Skip Ellison.
Stu and Mary Lou Murray and
Gary and BJ Evans attended the
memorial service for Walter
Oechsle’s wife, Christa. A young
woman who had received a scholarship
for foreign students paid for by
Walter and Christa spoke, noting the
Oechsles attended graduations and
weddings of those who received
similar scholarships.
Russ Smith and Rick Cortazzo
forward many emails.
George Tiger wonders how I get
my picture in so many articles from
the College.
Jim Sandford advised and assisted
with the reunion after Bob Mueller
passed away.
Chuck Lusch finds “lost”
classmates and located Joe Patlovich,
who is confined to a nursing home
with advanced Parkinson’s.
Irv Kunzman, who moved into an
apartment, sent his new email address:
grandmakunzman@gmail.com.
Dr. Jerry Brown shared that
his high school football team in
Portland, Mich., won the state
championship, the first in school
history. The game was played at
Detroit’s Ford Stadium with team
doctor (of 35 years) Jerry on the
sidelines. He practices medicine
and teaches family and community
medicine at Michigan State
University. Named Portland Citizen
of the Year in 2002, Jerry noted that
“some of the Lafayette magic must
have rubbed off on me.”
I was back at Lafayette last fall for
the awards ceremony, Homecoming,
and one other football game.
Alan D. Crowley died Sept. 22,
2011. A lawyer in Charles Town, W.Va.,
who learned of Alan’s connection to
the class through a newsletter, provided
the notice.
John B. Ernst (not to be confused
with John M. Ernst) passed away in
March 2011. After one semester, he
transferred to and graduated from
Lycoming College.
Stephen A. C. Smith died Oct. 14
in Binghamton, N.Y. An electrical
engineer, he was employed by the
federal government as a quality
assurance engineering consultant.
His passion was model trains.
Per T. Saverstrom passed away
Nov. 25. He attended one year before
transferring to Upsala College, where
he received his degree. He was a
piano player, a Delt, and with Jim
Sandford on guitar often entertained
at DTD and other fraternities. Per
had hoped to return for the 55th,
but health issues intervened. I
represented the class at the funeral
services in Florida.
Reunion dates:
1958 June 7–9. Please
make an effort to come, at least for
one night, to get together, shake
hands with old friends, lift a glass,
and understand how lucky we are to
have shared the Lafayette experience.
Joe Skladany ’82 and I (Ed
Brunswick) were the Lafayette
hosts at the Brooklyn Beer Garden
in Naples, Fla., where only six
people from the Hill showed to
watch Lehigh beat Lafayette. The
