What was your first day on the job like Similar to the TV show “COPS”—it was action filled. We arrested a child molester and did a “hot-stop” on a stolen car with two suspects and a pit-bull inside. What is the one thing you are most proud of since joining the department Assisting in the Explorer Program. Having started as an explorer, I decided to give back as an advisor and it is truly worth while. Explorers are some of our best people, because they start off on the right foot. Where do you see yourself in five years Investigations. What is one thing you think the DSA should focus on in the upcoming year Healthcare. It seems like we are paying more for less coverage over the years. Every time I try to use my high priced healthcare, it seems like representatives try to deny service. Separately, anyone who has been injured on duty knows what a nightmare it is dealing with the county. How do you participate in your DSA Voting, reading the DSA magazine, and the occasional purchase at the DSA store. Do you have an unusual hobby Handmade knife and key ring lanyards. From the boredom of being stuck home after an injury sustained on duty, I gained the skill of making lanyards out of Army Para chord. What is the one movie that influenced you the most Groundhog Day. We essentially live the same day over and over again. It is up to us to make a change. If you could switch places with anyone for one day, who would it be My dog. He’s the only one I know who can be happy no matter what. What is your favorite place On the saddle of my mountain bike or at the sushi bar; I can’t decide. What is your dream vacation Maui sounds nice but I’m a simple man. Being able to Jetski, go scuba diving, or ride my mountain bike whenever I want would be very nice. What are your plans for retirement First off to make it to retirement. After that, I think I’ll spend some time in Australia. I’ve never been there and it looks exciting. The member spotlight features one Active or Retired DSA Member each month. DSA Dinner Dance The annual DSA Dinner Dance takes place March 12 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay. SUPPORT CPOMF ON YOUR TAXES The DSA encourages you to make a voluntary, tax-free contribution on your state income tax return to the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation Fund. Taxpayers can make voluntary tax-free contributions on their personal state income tax returns to the “California Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation Fund”. The process is simple. No checks to write and no solicitors. Merely enter an amount of at least $1 on your state income tax return. All contributions are used to maintain the California Peace Officers’ Memorial and for activities in support of the surviving families of those brave peace officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. When you file your state income tax return for 2010, the California Peace Officer Memorial Foundation urges every taxpayer and the more than 100,000 professional peace officers serving in California to assist us in taking care of your own. DEPT. MEMORIAL Donate today Recently the HDSA has taken on a new project—the construction of a life-size bronze memorial of a Sheriff handing a folded flag to the widow and child of a fallen officer. This will be a most impressive memorial, and one befitting an organization the size of our Sheriff’s Department. It will be built outside the main entrance to the Ridgehaven Court headquarters building. This memorial will stand as a lasting tribute to those who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. The HDSA is asking for your donation to make this a reality. Please give whatever you can; your donation will make a huge difference. The HDSA has pledged over $200,000 of member-donated funds towards this project. Donations are completely tax-deductible. Donors of $50 or more will receive a commemorative Law Enforcement Memorial Challenge Coin, which will have an etched image of the Memorial. Paul Guinto (First Sergeant, U.S. Army Reserve) was relieved by Ofc. Timothy Vaughan (Senior Chief, U.S. Navy Reserve) of the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Alabama. The change of command ceremony occurred on Jan. 11, 2011 for the Wasit Provincial Reconstruction Team, Iraq. Both “Citizen Warriors” worked with the Department of State, Department of Agriculture, United States Aid for International Development, United States Army Corps of Engineers, and the United States Air Force to help rebuild the infrastructure of Iraq’s government. It is a coincidence that both are employed by a law enforcement agency in their civilian capacity.
