CGA ENGINEERING C O N F E R E N C E 2012 PROGRAM 2:00 - 2:15 pm Foyer Refreshments 2:15 - 3:15 pm Stream Selection (select one) Kensington One - Technical 17) “Black Starting” in Preparation for the Next Major Blackout: the Dawn Microgrid The Northeast blackout of 2003 exposed the vulnerability of the power grid to a prolonged failure. At the Dawn Operations Centre, the heart of Union Gas’ Storage and Transmission Operations, a steady supply of AC power is necessary to sustain critical control, communication, and cooling systems. In addition to reminders from the 2003 blackout, Dawn’s aging fleet of standby gas generators and an inherently weak rural feeder from Hydro One have made the reliability of its electric power supply a growing concern. This talk will discuss how Union Gas recently addressed this problem through a control system upgrade, which enables low voltage gas generators to restore Dawn’s 27.6 kV grid. Alicia Farag, Program Manager, Gas Technology Institute Lynden - Asset Management 20) Operational Efficiency Gains through Technology The presentation will cover a technology initiative undertaken by Intermountain Gas to reduce business costs. Intermountain introduced a concept of capturing inspection data with field devices and barcodes to reduce “Back-Office” operations and improve data integrity. Dr. Kwamena of Natural Resources Canada will discuss the overall threats to these energy systems, the Critical infrastructure Network & the need to amplify the awareness around Cyber Security. Dr. Felix Kwamena, Natural Resources Canada 4:15 - 4:30 pm Bristol C Closing Remarks Manchester - Technology 19) Booster Compressor The booster compressor technology focuses on recovering natural gas when purging pipelines. With the aid of a booster compressor natural gas is extracted from any part of a pipeline that is isolated from the system and re-injected into an unaffected part of the system or another receiving pipeline.
