Head teacher Carol Maddrell expla<strong>in</strong>ed:<br />
‘Years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are vot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> elect two representatives from each class <strong>to</strong> go forward and represent them.<br />
‘The School Council gives children an opportunity <strong>to</strong> have a “voice” with<strong>in</strong> the school and <strong>in</strong>volves them <strong>in</strong><br />
decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g,’ Mrs. Maddrell expla<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />
‘It also gives the children an <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>to</strong> politics and the democratic process, which is why we are do<strong>in</strong>g it the<br />
same day as the general election, <strong>to</strong> help the children understand what is happen<strong>in</strong>g.’<br />
Candidates have been <strong>in</strong>vited <strong>to</strong> produce posters <strong>to</strong> put<br />
up around school and prepare manifes<strong>to</strong>s <strong>to</strong> help<br />
persuade their peers <strong>to</strong> vote for them. They will also be<br />
<strong>in</strong>vited <strong>to</strong> present a short speech just before vot<strong>in</strong>g takes<br />
place.<br />
The ballot forms will be similar <strong>to</strong> the ones used <strong>in</strong> the<br />
general election and young voters will place crosses<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st the candidates they wish <strong>to</strong> vote for before<br />
slott<strong>in</strong>g their forms <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the ballot box.<br />
Mrs. Maddrell said:<br />
‘This will be tied <strong>in</strong> with discussions <strong>in</strong> the classrooms<br />
about the general election and the similarities between<br />
the roles of MHKs and school council members.’
