Communications by the President:<br />

The President welcomed student members <strong>to</strong> the n<strong>in</strong>th Jersey Youth <strong>Assembly</strong> and advised that Sena<strong>to</strong>r F.H.<br />

Walker, Chief M<strong>in</strong>ister had sent his apologies as he was unwell and therefore unable <strong>to</strong> attend. The President<br />

thanked Sena<strong>to</strong>r Le Sueur for agree<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> take his place.<br />

QUESTIONS<br />

Tom Coward, of Vic<strong>to</strong>ria College, asked the follow<strong>in</strong>g question of the M<strong>in</strong>ister for Health and Social<br />

Services –<br />

What precautions have been put <strong>in</strong> place <strong>to</strong> attempt <strong>to</strong> protect Jersey from H5N1(Bird Flu) and <strong>in</strong> case of<br />

an outbreak what plans have been put <strong>in</strong> place <strong>to</strong> attempt <strong>to</strong> control and conta<strong>in</strong> an outbreak<br />

The M<strong>in</strong>ister for Health and Social Services replied <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g terms –<br />

There are no cases of bird flu <strong>in</strong> Jersey at this time. To protect Jersey from bird flu the Environment Department<br />

has:<br />

Introduced a licens<strong>in</strong>g scheme for import<strong>in</strong>g live birds <strong>to</strong> Jersey<br />

Asked all keepers of poultry or water fowl <strong>to</strong> register with the Environment Department.<br />

The public have been advised not <strong>to</strong> <strong>to</strong>uch dead birds and <strong>to</strong> report dead birds <strong>to</strong> the Environment
