EDITORIALS From the Editor On the Earth’s power Our Earth is a bounteous planet supporting an environment which gives life: its right and proper role in the psyche of mankind. Events in Christchurch and Japan in the last month or so, have forcibly reminded us that the earth is also a vast rock, floating in space, which has absolutely no regard for the safety of its population, and continues its evolutionary path regardless – as has happened for millenia. Historians, geologists and geographers tell us that similar events in varying degrees have been happening since our ‘rock’ became a world and the evidence of survival and rebuilding shows us that our species is amazingly powerful in its own way. Our evolutionary path has given us the strength and will to go on, as we can see happening here and in Japan. It may seem trite to say this, but I am proud to see the community of Christchurch picking itself up and starting the journey back to normal, whatever that may be. Quality information Having decried the amount of poor information about food published in general media, it Anne Scott is worth mentioning that the Science Media Centre (SMC), ably run by Peter Griffin and his team, does an excellent job of ensuring that no journalist can say that good science information is not available. Whenever a story breaks (and often before) the SMC team gather expert comment and distribute it to subscribers by email, and maintain a website which contains a valuable resource for journalists. SMC also run regular online media briefings. The SMC (NZ) is an independent centre established by the Royal Society of New Zealand with funding from the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology It’s worth a look, www.sciencemediacentre.co.nz Anne Scott, MNZIFST, Publisher and Editor From the President Two messages this month Just as Canterbury is strong in sport, the Canterbury branch of the Institute is strong too. First established in 1968, the branch has been home to several conferences and has a very active life. I thought about this when I visited some Canterbury branch members at their places of work just a week ago. You can read about these visits on page 12 of this issue. What occurred to me is this. The Canterbury food processing industry is pretty well OK and employs a lot of people whose homes, belongings and friends are not OK. The Canterbury food industry is contributing wages and salaries to its employees; more than a hundred of whom are our members. While we can personally do our part by making donations to the Red Cross etc, we can do a lot more by buying products and services from Christchurch. As consumers we can choose to buy Airborne Honey or a Cookietime One Square Meal. As industrial customers we have much more spending power and can choose to give the red and blacks have a chance at supplying our companies. Conference Our annual conference is a great event. If you have never been, talk to someone who has. This year it is being held at the purpose-built Events Centre in Rotorua. Ask your boss if you can go. The programme, which is on the website, is shaping up really well and so to is the Food Trade Exhibition. Over 40 providers of specialist products and services will be exhibiting. Talk to your boss and use these three good reasons why he or she should send you. (Busy bosses don’t need any more than three good reasons). 1. 2. 3. Easily meet potential suppliers, customers and experts in your field. In other words, extend your network. Learn about recent developments and trends in your industry.
