NZIFST CAREERS A new careers initiative - The 2009 NZIFST Student Product Development Challenge NZIFST is delighted to be the naming sponsor for the 2009 Student Product Development Challenge, being run by Massey University and CREST. In 2006 Massey University first invited secondary schools in Auckland to enter the Massey Food Awards Student PD Challenge. In 2008 they again ran the Challenge, after linking it to the CREST Awards scheme administered by The Royal Society of New Zealand. Following positive feedback from the teacher and students who participated last year, Massey and CREST were keen to run the challenge in 2009 - incorporating some changes to better link it to the school curricula. The challenge requires that teams of senior secondary students develop a new food product for an industry client with the aims of • • • • Improving knowledge in schools about food technology Linking the science and technology curricula, by providing a challenge which incorporates both Giving students the opportunity to work with professional food technologists to develop a new product for a real food industry client (an authentic experience) Raising the profile of a career in food science, technology and engineering with senior science and technology students, their teachers, parents and schools. The Challenge is being trialled in Auckland this year. Seven schools have signed up to take part, with up to twelve teams of students participating. Each team of four students( who are studying both NCEA science and food technology) will develop a new food product for an industry client, following the process defined in the Team Silver CREST Awards. This is very similar to the product development process used by the food industry. They will be supported by a food technologist, who will be their CREST “consultant”. Futureintech supports the CREST scheme, and Futureintech Ambassadors have been approached to be CREST “consultants”. Where we could not find enough Ambassadors with the time available to be consultants, we have approached NZIFST members to take on the role. Massey University will provide professional development support to those food technology teachers who would like it. The students started their projects in term 1, and will complete them in Term 3. They will participate in the Massey Open Day on 12 September, and at the end of term 3, they will submit their projects to CREST assessors for judging. All teams which achieve the requirements of the Team Silver CREST Award will receive the award, and will then be entered into the NZIFST Student PD Challenge. Winners will be announced at an awards The St Kentigern College team at the 2008 Massey Food Awards with Professor Ray Winger and their teacher, Carolyn Norquay function in October 2009, hosted by the Auckland Branch of NZIFST. The judges can also choose to nominate some teams to attend “Realise the Dream”, a six day event held in Wellington each year, hosted by The Royal Society, which celebrates the achievements of students who have demonstrated excellence in science and research. Professor Ray Winger from Massey University says: “This is a fantastic initiative and we are excited to be working with NZIFST, The Royal Society/CREST and Futureintech to inspire High School students to take-up career in the food industry. This is a real opportunity to show high achieving students, their parents and teachers how we integrate sciences into a challenging, fun and rewarding career in New Zealand’s biggest industrial sector. Our earlier experiences have shown clearly how constructive and rewarding this activity has been for everyone involved.” CREST NZ is delighted to be working, in this collaborative venture, with NZIFST, Massey University, Futureintech, industry, teachers and students. The 2009 NZIFST Student Product Development Challenge offers all of these, plus a myriad of other opportunities.
