Many aspects of jazz drumming are<br />

covered here, from learning tunes to<br />

performing with a drum choir ensemble<br />

and professional rhythm section at a local<br />

jazz club. Held on the campus of Western<br />

Michigan University, the Intensive is<br />

sectioned off into two segments based<br />

on players’ skill levels.<br />

themselves in a week of jazz study.<br />

McNally Smith partners with the Twin<br />

Cities Jazz Festival to bring campers<br />

a bounty of pro clinicians. Past guests<br />

include vibraphonist Gary Burton and<br />

pianist Danilo Pérez.<br />

this MSU School of Music program,<br />

which gravitates toward jazz orchestra<br />

and small combos. Campers master<br />

musical concepts through a seasoned<br />

faculty while experiencing all that a<br />

college campus has to offer.<br />

The camp includes concert performances<br />

every evening, and high school students<br />

are welcome. Study areas include concert<br />

band, percussion, marching band,<br />

color guard, orchestra, drum major and<br />

jazz band. The Summer Symposium also<br />

offers a Leadership Weekend Experience<br />

(June 23–25).<br />

University Jazz Camp<br />

DeKalb, Illinois<br />

July 15–20<br />

This camp is for jazz musicians of all skill<br />

levels who want to focus on a creative<br />

approach to improvisation and ensemble<br />

playing. Campgoers are assigned to<br />

either big band, combo or Latin jazz<br />

arrangements, and attend rehearsals,<br />

seminars on jazz styles and business of<br />

music throughout the week.<br />
