Gym Fit
AGE & AGING
Contributed by our Resident Gym Instructor, Yusoff Bin Hashim
By the time you reach middle age, your body reads like a book. Just by looking
at you, casual observers can pretty well determine your lifestyle. If they see
a muscular and toned body, healthy and glowing skin, a good posture and a
positive attitude, they would form one opinion. If they see a flabby and overweight
body, leathery and wrinkled skin, a pale complexion and a negative
attitude, they would form another. Nothing ages a person more than excess
weight. Even a youngster in his twenties can appear middle-aged when their
youthful facial features and physique become distorted by fats.
The tendency to overeat and under exercise is the norm in our society, and the result
is that more Singaporeans are becoming overweight. Not only do we eat much, we eat
too much of the wrong kind of food. Too many of us do damage to our bodies by eating
unhealthy. We not only add years to both our faces and bodies prematurely, we also
increase our chances of developing chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and
cancer that may lead to an early death. Fortunately, it is never too late to take charge of
your body by making healthy changes.
Everyone has a biological age, determined by the number of years we have been in
this world. But what about the “age” we wear on our faces and bodies That is affected by
exercise, diet, attitude, exposure to the sun, sleep and a sense of control over our lives.
Regular exercise will make you look younger as it increases your metabolism, strength and
flexibility. It also tones your muscles and reduces body fat.
Living to 80 years old is good but being healthy and functional 80-year-old is even better. It is
not late to get started. Give me a call or drop by a friendly chat. See you at the Gym!
Squash Friendly with Safsa
A total of 24 participants turned up for our Squash Friendly
with Singapore Armed Forces Sports Association (SAFSA),
which was held on Tuesday 15 January. Each side fielded
12 players and the friendly game revolved around a series
of 12 matches with each match based on the best of three
games. The score was 6-all at the end, with each team winning
6 matches to draw the friendly match. Our squash stalwart
Mr Chow Hoi Sung, who is still going strong and fit at 73, was
amongst those who helped us defend the JCC grounds.
A return match is on the cards, and we welcome all active and
keen JCC squash players to come join us for this and other squash
friendlies.
