MIDDLE SCHOOL INFORMATION ELECTRONIC DEVICES USAGE POLICY Th e USD 231 Board of Education adopted the Electronic Devices Usage Policy on May 7, 2007. Per the policy, students must keep their phones (along with all other personal electronic devices, including MP3 players) in their lockers during the instructional school day. Cell phones are not permitted in classrooms. Students may check messages after the fi nal bell. Th e policy took eff ect on August 13, 2007 and pertains to all students, Grades K-12. Th e complete Electronic Devices Usage Policy is available online at www.usd231.com. Click on Parent Information. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL Th e fi rst day of school for the 2010/11 year will be Th ursday, August 12, 2010. Students at both middle schools will attend only a partial day of school. Grades 5-8 will dismiss at 11:00 a.m. No lunch will be served. LOCKERS Each student is assigned a locker, and may occupy only the locker to which he or she is assigned. Periodic inspections will be made to insure that lockers are kept neat and orderly. Stickers inside lockers are not permitted. Students should leave expensive personal items, such as MP3 players and portable game systems at home. PHYSICAL EXAMS FOR ATHLETES All middle school and high school students involved in athletics must have a physical examination form signed by a doctor and parent on fi le in the Student Activities Offi ce. Students must use the Kansas State High School Athletics Association (KSHSAA) form, available in the school offi ce or on the district website. Students may get their physical through their family physician. All athletes must complete their physical and insurance waiver before they can begin sports practice. 13 SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS An offi cial list of recommended school supplies for each middle school and grade level is available on your school’s website, or from your school’s offi ce. If you need assistance obtaining school supplies, please contact the Gardner Multi-Service Center at 856- 7405. TRANSPORTATION TO SCHOOL Driving your Child to School Parents who drive their child(ren) to and from school are asked to utilize the designated drop-off and pick-up loop, which is separate from bus traffi c zones at all elementary and middle schools. Please pull forward to the student drop-off and pick-up area, and remain in your vehicle. Maintain a low speed when entering or exiting school parking areas, and be cautious of students who may be walking or riding bicycles. Bus Riders Bus route schedules are available on the district website, www.usd231.com and from the First Student Offi ce, located in the District Maintenance Service Center building (on the north side of the Nike Elementary School Campus) 19500 S. Gardner Road. Call 856-5650. Bicycle Riders and Walkers Please utilize sidewalks and designated crosswalks, and cross roadways with the assistance of a Gardner Public Safety crossing guard, where available. YEARBOOK Each middle school produces an annual Yearbook, which is available for purchase. Yearbooks cost $20 each. If you would like to purchase a middle school yearbook, please provide payment to your school offi ce no later than November 23, 2010.
