BUS TRANSPORTATION POLICY (continued)<br />
EXITING THE BUS<br />
1. Students must follow any instruction from the driver when exiting<br />
the bus.<br />
2. Students should cross the road <strong>at</strong> least ten feet in front of the bus,<br />
and only when the driver signals it is safe. Th e student should also<br />
look to be sure no traffi c is approaching from either direction.<br />
U.S.D. <strong>231</strong> will not discrimin<strong>at</strong>e on the basis of race, religion, sex,<br />
color, n<strong>at</strong>ural origin, handicapping condition or any other st<strong>at</strong>utorily<br />
prohibited basis.<br />
DAILY BUS SCHEDULE<br />
Bus inform<strong>at</strong>ion will be available <strong>at</strong> enrollment and on the school<br />
district web site.<br />
PERSONAL BELONGINGS<br />
To reduce the risk of loss, First Student recommends th<strong>at</strong> students<br />
leave all personal electronic items <strong>at</strong> home, including MP3 players and<br />
personal gaming devices. Cell phones should be stowed in back packs.<br />
BUS DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES<br />
In order to ensure safe oper<strong>at</strong>ion of the bus, students are responsible<br />
for their behavior while riding the bus. Behavior infractions will be reported,<br />
and disciplinary action taken in accordance with the guidelines<br />
set forth by the school.<br />
Parents are requested to explain the importance of proper behavior on<br />
the bus. Th ey are also expected to support disciplinary actions th<strong>at</strong> are<br />
necessary to help their child modify his/her behavior.<br />
Th e primary responsibility of the bus driver is to safely transport<br />
students to and from school. While transporting students, the driver<br />
is responsible for maintaining discipline on the bus. Th e driver will<br />
report behavior infractions to the proper authority using the referral<br />
forms provided.<br />

Consequences for Minor Bus Infrac� ons<br />
Warning Following an ini� al warning, a student will often<br />
modify their behavior, rendering a referral<br />
unnecessary. Re-assignment of assigned se<strong>at</strong>s<br />
is o� en necessary. Ini� al warnings will be<br />
noted on any subsequent referral forms.<br />
First O� ense Driver conferences with the student, iden� -<br />
� es the infrac� on, writes up a behavior<br />
referral, and provides copies to the appropri<strong>at</strong>e<br />
school administr<strong>at</strong>or. The administr<strong>at</strong>or<br />
contacts the parent and assigns appropri<strong>at</strong>e<br />
discipline.<br />
Second O� ense In addi� on to the procedure outlined for a<br />
First O� ense, the parents are informed th<strong>at</strong><br />
a bus suspension will occur in the event of a<br />
third o� ense.<br />
Third O� ense In addi� on to the procedure outlined in the<br />
First and Second O� enses above, the administr<strong>at</strong>or<br />
contacts the parent, reviews the child’s<br />
behavior record, and suspends the bus riding<br />
privileges for 1-5 days. All subsequent o� enses<br />
in the minor c<strong>at</strong>egory will be tre<strong>at</strong>ed as a<br />
Major Infrac� on, in order as a � rst, second<br />
and third o� ense, resul� ng in corresponding<br />
disciplinary ac� on (see subsequent chart).<br />
Consequences for Major Bus Infrac� ons<br />
First O� ense Driver conferences with the student, iden� -<br />
� es the infrac� on and writes up a behavior<br />
referral with copies to the appropri<strong>at</strong>e school<br />
administr<strong>at</strong>or. The Administr<strong>at</strong>or contacts the<br />
parent, reviews the behavior incident, and<br />
suspends the student’s riding privileges for<br />
3-5 days.<br />
Second O� ense In addi� on to the procedure outlined for<br />
the First O� ense, riding privileges may be<br />
suspended for an extended period of � me as<br />
determined by the school administr<strong>at</strong>or.<br />
Third O� ense In addi� on to the procedure outlined for<br />
the First O� ense, riding privileges may be<br />
suspended for an extended period of � me as<br />
determined by the school administr<strong>at</strong>or. An<br />
administra� ve hearing to consider long-term<br />
suspension may also be requested by the<br />
school administr<strong>at</strong>or.<br />
Th e school administr<strong>at</strong>or will determine <strong>at</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> level an off ense has<br />
occurred, based on any prior referral forms and/or disciplinary action.<br />
If the infraction is a viol<strong>at</strong>ion of the law, the proper authorities will be<br />
notifi ed. If the infraction results in property damage, restitution must<br />
be paid or a plan for restitution must be agreed upon before riding<br />
privileges will be reinst<strong>at</strong>ed.<br />
