Units 1&2<br />

Unit purpose<br />

The Work Related Skills Intermediate Units provides<br />

a focus for more complex development of work related<br />

and pre-vocational skills in a context appropriate<br />

to the task:<br />

integrating more complex learning about work<br />

related skills with prior knowledge and experiences<br />

enhancing the development of Key Competencies<br />

at a more complex level in relevant work<br />

related contexts<br />

developing more complex critical thinking skills<br />

that can be applied to work related problem solving<br />

situations<br />

developing more complex work related planning<br />

and organisational skills that incorporate evaluation<br />

and review<br />

developing more complex work related skills,<br />

which can be transferred to other work contexts.<br />

There is no formal on the job training requirement<br />

within the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning.<br />

If a student does undertake a SWL as part of their<br />

VCAL Learning Program, they must undertake the<br />

Work Related Skills Unit One and/or an appropriate<br />

accredited Occupational Health and Safety unit of<br />

competence prior to commencement of the SWL.<br />

Learning outcome 1<br />

Collect, analyse and organise information for a work<br />

related goal.<br />

Learning outcome 2<br />

Plan and organise activities for a work related goal.<br />

Learning outcome 3<br />

Communicate ideas and information for a work related<br />

goal.<br />

Learning outcome 4<br />

Work with others and in teams to achieve a work related<br />

goal.<br />

Learning outcome 5<br />

Use mathematical ideas and techniques for a work<br />

related goal.<br />

Learning outcome 6<br />

Solve problems for a work related purpose.<br />

Assessment<br />

A range of assessment methods may be applied to<br />

VCAL Intermediate Unit. Examples include:<br />

a portfolio of accumulated evidence<br />

teacher observation and/or checklists<br />

evidence accumulated through project or program<br />

participation<br />

awards from recognised programs<br />

self-assessment inventories<br />

record of discussion about Quality Assurance<br />

(QA) procedures<br />

evidence of use of QA processes e.g. use of appropriate<br />

documentation<br />

oral or written reports.<br />

Learning outcomes and assessment<br />

criteria<br />

Students must show competence in all five learning<br />

outcomes.<br />

Collect, analyse and organise information about basic<br />

conditions and entitlements of a specific industry.<br />

Contribute to OH&S in a work related context.<br />

Learning outcome 3<br />

Obtain and provide information in response to a<br />

work related requirement.<br />

Contribute to team objectives to achieve a work related<br />

goal.<br />

Learning outcome 5<br />

Identify routine problems or hazards that can affect<br />

the safety of the work environment.<br />
