Work Related<br />
Skills Senior<br />
Units 1&2<br />
Unit purpose<br />
The Work Related Skills Senior Unit provides a focus<br />
for the development of work related and vocational<br />
skills in a workplace context or appropriate simulation.<br />
There is no formal on the job training requirement<br />
within the Victorian Certificate of Applied<br />
Learning. However, students may undertake, within<br />
their Learning Program, a SWL or on the job learning<br />
or recognition of prior learning in a work context.<br />
This will be counted as a unit where students are able<br />
to meet the learning outcomes of the unit through<br />
their SWL or part time work over 100 nominal hours.<br />
The overall aims of the unit include:<br />
•integrating learning of increasing complexity of work<br />
related skills with prior knowledge and experiences<br />
about work<br />
•further enhancing the development of Key Competencies<br />
through increasingly complex work related<br />
activity<br />
•developing increasingly complex critical thinking<br />
skills that apply to problem solving situations in the<br />
work context<br />
•developing planning and organisational skills that<br />
incorporate evaluation and review<br />
•applying increasingly complex transferable skills to<br />
work related contexts.<br />
If a student does undertake a SWL as part of their<br />
VCAL Learning Program, they must undertake the<br />
Work Related Skills Unit One and/or an appropriate<br />
accredited Occupational Health and Safety unit of<br />
competence prior to commencement of the SWL.<br />
Learning outcomes and assessment<br />
criteria<br />
Students must show competence in all six learning<br />
outcomes.<br />
Learning outcome 1<br />
Research information about the career pathways,<br />
functions and layout of a specific industry or workplace.<br />
Learning outcome 2<br />
Assist in the Hazard Identification Risk Assessment<br />
and Control planning process to meet OH&S requirements<br />
in a work related context.<br />
Learning outcome 3<br />
Communicate ideas and information about OH&S<br />
requirements for a work environment.<br />
Learning outcome 4<br />
Work with others and in teams in a work environment<br />
in accordance with defined workplace procedures.<br />
Learning outcome 5<br />
Describe an OH&S plan for a work related environment<br />
that addresses up to three OH&S concerns.<br />
Learning outcome 6<br />
Use technology in accordance with OH&S guidelines<br />
in a work related context.<br />
Unit 2<br />
Learning outcome 1<br />
Collect, analyse and organise information in a work<br />
environment.<br />
Learning outcome 2<br />
Plan and organise activities in a work environment.<br />
Learning outcome 3<br />
Communicate ideas and information in a work environment.<br />
Learning outcome 4<br />
Work with others and in teams in a work environment.<br />
Learning outcome 5<br />
Use mathematical ideas and techniques in a work environment.<br />
Learning outcome 6<br />
Solve problems in a work environment.<br />
Assessment<br />
A range of assessment methods may be applied to<br />
VCAL Senior Unit. Examples include:<br />
a portfolio of accumulated evidence<br />
teacher observation and/or checklists<br />
evidence accumulated through project or program<br />
participation<br />
awards from recognised programs<br />
self-assessment inventories<br />
oral or written reports.<br />
