Practice Innovations: patient stories, videos, phone follow up
and the CARE measure

Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Triage provides an alternative care pathway within the community
for patients historically referred to hospital out-patient services.
Dry needling is used as an adjunct to treatment for a wide range of painful foot conditions
such as Hallux Limitus, heel pain, painful diabetic neuropathy, Plantar digital neuritis and Plantar
Fasciitis. Particular benefit has been reported for those patients with podiatric conditions that
have proved difficult to progress or resolve using traditional treatment methods. There are now
26 podiatrists across NHSGGC trained in steroid injection therapy.
The impact of projects using qualitative feedback from service users. Video, patient stories and
telephone feedback of patient experience of self referral.
Video and patient stories: patients were interviewed in their own home at a convenient time by
the practice development physiotherapist and one of the service managers. Footage was edited
down to approximately six minutes. This is a powerful tool for improvements but especially in
explaining AHP services to non-clinicians and board members.
Telephone feedback: a practical, relatively inexpensive way to get good quality qualitative
feedback on a service.
CARE: clinicians attended NES funded training on ‘empathy and engagement’. Following this
300 measures were analysised. An opportunity arose to take part in a national reliability study of
the CARE measure for AHPs led by the NMAHP Research Unit at Stirling University. 80 clinicians
from the community are currently collecting CARE measures.

The team was established in May 2011 and provides various aspects of MSK care via podiatrists,
physiotherapists and OT staff. The rehabilitation teams were established to support integration
of the current range of rehabilitation services. The team will provide a full co-ordinated
assessment within the hospital or community. Treatment plans and reviews will take place within
a patient’s own home, or other appropriate community or workplace setting.
The aim is a single point of access, better pathways, local provision and patients seeing the
right person first time. The service will deal with all levels of need, complexity and vulnerability,
promoting self management and vocational rehabilitation. This will be underpinned by a full
understanding of the inequalities and discrimination faced by patients and the wider public.
