Provision of Occupational Therapy Handtherapy Services for orthopaedic clinic (LIH) and postsurgical
therapy for patients discharged from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospitals.
Mid CHP Podiatry delivers services in nine locations. All referrals are accepted. There is a
PEAK system for patient appointments and no electronic patient records. A New Activity and
Waiting Times data collection system in place since February 2011 across all AHP disciplines. No
recognised MSK specialist for Mid Highland CHP, but part-time post currently awaiting clearance
by vacancy panel. All staff expected to carry out routine MSK assessments and treatments.
MSK referrals continue to increase. 94% of new patients were seen within eight weeks of
their initial referral. Most staff are trained in acupuncture and two staff to undertake foot and
ankle steroid injections. There are plans to train staff up on x-ray interpretation as well as blood
and biochemistry results. All staff have access to results reporting and PACs imaging systems.
Functional orthoses are manufactured by clinicians on site and staff can refer on to the local
Orthotic Department for footwear and the more palliative type of orthotic devices. All staff are
able to refer directly to X-ray and Orthopaedics accept referrals.
The plans for a dedicated MSK triage referral service are underway across Highland. At the
moment South East Highland CHP is the only CHP without a recognised podiatric biomechanical
/ MSK specialist. Other CHPs within Highland either have an individual already in place or have
funding to put someone in place.

A team of six physio ESPs, a podiatry ESP and one consultant physio provide assessment clinics
for general MSK conditions which are unlikely to require surgery. These clinicians are able to
request necessary investigations and are also qualified in injection therapy which can be offered
as a treatment in both ortho and physiotherapy clinics. The same team provide complex case
clinical reasoning clinics across Lanarkshire and also provide training and support on a one-toone
basis with difficult physio/podiatry cases.
Improvements measured: reduction in number of back pain cases seen in ortho clinics, reduction
in ortho ESP waits, reduction in radiology requesting.
