Western Isles Podiatry Service offers musculoskeletal services in a number of forms. The
biomechanics clinic is based at the Western Isles Hospital and offers a specialised assessment
service and management for lower limb musculoskeletal pathologies or gait dysfunctions.
Referrals for the clinic may originate from the areas of rheumatology, orthopaedics, paediatrics,
fellow podiatrists, allied health professionals, GPs and patient self referral. This clinic is
conducted by the musculoskeletal specialist podiatrist. Joint consultations with fellow clinicians
can be arranged to ease the burden of multiple visits on the individual and aim to improve
clinical outcomes. This activity most frequently occurs with the paediatric physiotherapist.
All clinicians in the department are specialist general practitioners as a minimum and as such are
experienced in the management of general biomechanical and musculoskeletal complaints. This
permits wide and frequent patient access through outreach clinics. There is a continuous audit
cycle of orthotic provision and effectiveness.
A specialised orthotic manufacturing laboratory is located at the Western Isles Hospital which
allows clinicians to make, adjust or provide custom functional and accommodative or modified
pre-made appliances, greatly aiding compliance, and the speed/ease of modification. This asset
is also utilised by the visiting orthotist service.
