You should be able to see your specialist within two (2) weeks for a routine appointment. You should be seen<br />

within 24 hours if you have an urgent care appointment. You should be seen the same day if you need emergency<br />

care.<br />

What services do not need a referral<br />

Some services do not require a referral. Those services include:<br />

emergency care<br />

THSteps (well child care)<br />

OB/GYN Care<br />

eye care<br />

family planning<br />

behavioral health (mental health and substance abuse)<br />

dental services for under age 21<br />

How to get Behavioral <strong>Health</strong><br />

(Mental <strong>Health</strong> and Substance Abuse Services)<br />

<strong>Parkland</strong> HEALTHfirst provides behavioral health (mental health and drug and alcohol abuse) services through<br />

NorthSTAR.<br />

If you, or your child, are having a mental health /alcohol or drug abuse problem, you can call for an appointment<br />

with your primary care provider (PCP) or call the NorthSTAR program directly, toll-free at 1-888-800-6799.<br />

You do not need a referral from your PCP to get services from NorthSTAR.<br />

If you, or your child, have a behavioral health emergency and need behavioral health treatment, go to the nearest<br />

Emergency Room or call toll-free at 1-888-800-6799 and someone will help you get care right away. You or<br />

someone on your behalf will need to call the behavioral health provider line at 1-888-800-6799 and let them know<br />

you had an emergency.<br />

How do I get my medicines<br />

You get all the medicines your PCP thinks you need, including birth control pills. You can take your prescription<br />

to any pharmacy that takes Medicaid. Try to use one pharmacy for all of your prescriptions. You will need to<br />

show your Medicaid Identification Form (Form 3087) and HEALTHfirst ID card. If you have a problem<br />

getting your prescriptions, call our <strong>Member</strong> Services line at 1-888-672-2277 or the Medicaid Client Hotline at 1-<br />

800-252-8263. The Medicaid Client Hotline can connect you with a Vendor Drug Representative.<br />
