The program begins with an introduction for students, as they investigate art.
Experiencing Art Through the Senses and optional Studio Workshop: Students discover
works of art using the five senses. This tour is followed by an art response in the Kohl’s Art
Generation Studio.
Elements of Art 1: Students investigate line, shape, and color in works of art.
Elements of Art 2: Students investigate space and texture in works of art.
Year 2 (Grade 4): People, Culture, and History
The tours for year two guide students as they connect with the community around them.
imagery, and historical and cultural context.
During the final set of tours, students extend their learning, leading to a personal association.
American History Through Art and Selection: Students investigate American history through
art. Back at school, using the Museum’s website, each student selects a work of art from the
Museum’s Collection to study and research.
Antiquities to Contemporary: Students explore a variety of art forms and movements
throughout history, from ancient to modern times.
Study and Sketching of Artwork: Using their selected pieces, students engage in guided art
discussions and complete a sketching guide to assist in their study and research.
Graduation: Students act as docents and create a reproduction of their chosen work of art to
present an oral report and aesthetic response to a group of family members, adults, and
peers.
Every school participating in JDSP receives the services of one of our trained docents
(volunteer educators) while enrolled in the program. JDSP relies on the docent liaisons to assist
with planning school visits to the Museum and various other tasks as students’ progress through
the program. The docent liaison is the school’s personal connection to the Museum.
