With the mild winter and
early spring-like temperatures
we have had this year,
many forage producers are
starting to think about
crop fertilization. However,
several factors should be
considered when planning
a fertility program.
First, warm-season
grasses cannot use fertilizer
until they are actively
growing. This generally
doesn’t occur until nighttime
termperatures are
consistently in the upper
60s to 70 degrees. Fertilizing
too early can promote
growth of competing weeds
WISE NOTES FOR CONSUMERS
According to the 2002 Sleep
n America Poll, as many as
7 million adults may be puting
themselves at risk for
njury or health and behavor
problems because they
ren’t meeting their minium
sleep requirements
n order to be fully alert the
ext day.
Most adults need at least
even to nine hours of sleep
er night. If you are not geting
enough sleep, you probaly
feel groggy during monotnous
or boring activities or
eel unreasonably irritable.
nsufficient sleep is directly
inked to poor health, so if
ou aren’t getting enough
zzz’s, you are putting yourelf
at risk.
It is important to get both
proper quantity (enough
ours) and quality (uninterrupted)
of sleep so that
your brain and body can go
through all of the necessary
stages of sleep for
you to be healthy,
alert, safe and productive
the next
day.
Here are some
tips that may help
you make gains in
the area of a better
quality and increased
quantity of
sleep:
■ Stick to a sleep
schedule. Go to bed and wake
up at the same time each
day. It helps set your biological
clock and makes it easier
to wake up.
■ Exercise, but not too late
in the day. Try to exercise
30 minutes a day, but avoid
exercising close to bedtime
since exercise can stimulate
and increase alertness.
and increase production
inputs (costs) for herbicides
to control the
problem. Secondly,
since the fertilizer
is not being used
by the crop, it is
subject to loss by
leaching or runoff
if substantial rainfall
occurs.
Growers also often
want to know
what kind of fertilizer
should be
applied and how
much should be applied.
There are 20 essential nutrients
required for crop
production, of which, about
12 can become deficient in
■ Avoid caffeine and nicotine.
Both caffeine and nicotine
stimulate the central
nervous system.
■ Avoid alcoholic
drinks before bed.
A “nightcap” might
help you get to sleep,
but alcohol keeps
you in the lighter
stages of sleep and
tends to cause you
to wake up in the
middle of the night
when the sedating
effects have worn
off.
■ Avoid large meals and
beverages late at night. A
large meal can cause indigestion
that interferes with
sleep. Drinking too many
fluids at night can cause you
to awaken frequently to urinate.
■ Drink a glass of fat free
milk before bed. The amino
acid tryptophan in the milk
will help make you feel
sleepy. All dairy foods as well
as oats, bananas, poultry and
peanuts are good sources of
tryptophan.
■ Avoid medicines that
delay or disrupt your sleep,
if possible. Consult your doctor.
■ Nap, only if necessary. A
20 to 30 minute nap during
the day can be beneficial –
just don’t nap too long or too
late in the day (after 3 p.m.),
or you might find yourself
awake at night.
■ Relax before bed. Take
time to unwind. A relaxing
activity, such as reading or
listening to music, can be a
helpful part of your bedtime
ritual.
■ Take a hot bath before
bed. The drop in body temperature
after the bath may
help you feel sleepy, and the
Nitrogen is the primary
growth nutrient for most
crops and one of the greatest
economic inputs in
forage production. It is a
part of the cholorphyll molecule
and of proteins, and
as such, is important for
photosynthesis and crude
protein formation. In general,
any of the common nitrogen
sources (ammonium
nitrate, ammonium sulfate,
urea, anhydrous ammonia
and urea ammonium nitrate)
can be used in forage
crops with equal effectiveness.
The most important
bath can help relax you.
■ Have a good sleeping
environment. Make your
bedroom cool, dark, quiet
and comfortable.
■ Have the right sunlight
exposure. Daylight is key to
regulating daily sleep patterns.
Try to get outside in
natural sunlight for at least
30 minutes each day.
■ See a doctor if you continue
to have trouble sleeping.
If you consistently find
yourself feeling tired or not
well rested during the day
despite spending enough
time in bed at night, you
may have a sleep disorder.
Your family doctor or a sleep
specialist should be able to
help you.
issue is proper application.
Ammonium nitrate is an
excellent nitrogen source,
but it is hygroscopic (attracts
water), which causes
handling problems. Thus,
it is often not available in
more humid areas of the
state. Anhydrous ammonia,
which is a gas at atmospheric
pressure, must be
injected into the soil (with
good seal behind knives) to
minimize losses.
Both urea and ammonium
sulfate are subject to
volatilization (gaseous loss
of nitrogren) when surface
applied. This is true when
CANCER VACCINE
FOR YOUNG GIRLS
A new vaccine prevents certain
strains of cervical cancer, the second
leading cause of cancer-related
deaths in women globally. The cancer
the vaccine prevents is caused by
the human papillomavirus, or HPV.
Also the most common sexually
transmitted disease, HPV may or may
not manifest any symptoms, but it can
cause genital warts. It is important
that girls get immunized against HPV
before they become sexually active,
so pediatricians recommend they
become vaccinated around the age
of 11 or 12, and sometimes even
as young as 10 years old. As with
any vaccine, mild side effects such
as soreness at the injection site and
mild fever may occur, but contact
a doctor immediately concerning
any sign of allergic reaction.
