Nearly 800,000 Americans suffer strokes annually, and the majority 

of them are women. Because three out of five stroke-related deaths

The phrase “take the bull by the horns” means to summon 

all your courage and deal with a dicey situation head 

on. 

While just an expression for most, it’s a way of life for 

bulldogger K.C. Jones, 39, of Decatur. 

“It’s like gambling,” Jones said of bulldogging. “It’s an 

addiction.” 

Lots of things in life are a gamble, but pain is the only 

guarantee in the world of bulldogging, also called steer 

wrestling. 

The life of a bulldogger is one of extremes. 

Jones hit one of those extremes at the 2010 Fort Worth 

Stock Show and Rodeo.

long on the steer’s left side.

onto the scrambling steer and grabs the horns. His hands 

are like a pair of vice grips. 

“Lots of people try to over think this sport, but all you’re 

doing is tackling farm animals,” Jones said. 

He plows his heels into the sand and flips the quarter-ton 

animal in what appears like an almost effortless 

motion. It’s over before it begins. He posts a time of 3.5 

seconds, easily the fastest of the indoor rodeo on Feb. 6. 

But wait; a penalty is called. He prematurely broke the 

barrier before the steer did, which is not allowed in steer 

wrestling. He received a “no time” for his efforts. Just like 

that, the dice were rolled, and he came up snake eyes. 

“It was all or nothing,” Jones said. “After posting a ‘no 

time’ the last time I was out, I had to go for it. But the 

steer held up for just a second.” 

It’s unknown how the steer is going to break out of the 

shoot. If it pauses for a moment, it can cost a bulldogger 

trying to get the jump and post a lightning time.

Jones, a native of Las 

Animas, Colo., has already 

won more than $800,000 in 

prize money. He’s earned 

steer-wrestling championships 

at almost every major 

rodeo venue in the nation. 

“I’d rather win a dime 

than earn a dollar,” Jones 

said. “Rodeo is a big jackpot. 

Everybody puts in and 

one person wins big. You’re 

not trying to beat anybody; 

you’re just trying not to 

beat yourself.”

big—or ramble on with 

empty hands. 

A Texas original 

Bulldogging was invented 

by Texas native Bill Picket. 

Born in Williamson County 

in 1870, his parents were 

former slaves. 

One day in Rockdale in 

1903 Pickett subdued an 

ornery steer by riding his 

horse alongside a Longhorn. 

He jumped onto the bovine’s 

back and grabbed it 

by the horns like a steering 

wheel. Pickett then bit the 

steer’s lower lip and flipped 

the beast into the earth. 

Pickett later told author 

Dora Scarborough he got 

the idea of bulldogging after 

watching herd dogs at his 

family’s ranch and farm.

through rigorous and regular weight training. 

One year later, Pickett 

demonstrated bulldogging 

at Cheyenne Frontier Days 

Rodeo. Steer wrestling soon 

became a regular rodeo 

event. And just like Pickett, 

it attracts a peculiar breed 

of cowboy. 

Extreme cowboy 

Weighing in at 190 

pounds, Jones admits he’s a 

bit light for a bulldogger. 

So when not leaping on 

steers and beating his body 

into the dust, Jones builds 

his strength through a 

disciplined weight-lifting 

routine.

“It takes more finesse,” he 

said. “I can’t just grab the 

steer and bring him down. 

I have to transfer leverage 

from the steer.” 

But as much as Jones 

builds up in one direction, 

once he hits the circuit and 

prepares to cover thousands 

of miles, the life of the road 

wears him down. 

“This is a professional 

sport,” he said. “You have 

to work at it and stay in 

shape. But when you compete 

you are on the road all 

night. You live on a diet of 

coffee and Copenhagen.” 

For better or for worse 

Jones gives a lot of credit 

to his wife, Gayle, for his 

rodeo success. The couple 

met at a rodeo in Oakdale, 

Calif. Gayle is a barrel 

racer, and a big fan of rodeo 

in general. 

“On our first date, I took 

her to Denny’s,” Jones said. 

Jones was soon introducing 

Gayle to his parents 

back in Colorado. 

“Mom and dad told me 

that if I didn’t marry her 

they were going to adopt 

her,” Jones said. “We’ve 

been married seven years 

now. 

“She’s my number one 

fan. She’s gonna be in my 

corner if I get first or miss 

and bust my butt.” 

A few years ago the couple 

moved to Decatur. Jones 

practices and trains in a 

clay-floored rodeo arena

“It’s a team,” Jones said of their 

marriage. “Back before Gayle I didn’t 

have a lot of success at the circuit rodeo. 

But she helps take care of all the 

horses. And we have 14 to 15 horses 

here at one time. It’s a full-time job 

keeping up with supplies and the care 

taking.” 

And as Jones has said time and 

again, a good horse holds the key to 

winning in steer wrestling. 

Gayle also films Jones during 

events. He reviews the footage just 

like a football coach breaks down 

game film. 

“It’s so technical,” he said. “It’s 

pretty tough. You usually need to post 

a 3.5 to win the go-around. You break 

down film, see how the horse worked. 

You look at your relationship and poition 

between yourself and the steer.” 

Given the rough and tumble, the 

ps and downs, and the extremes of 

ulldogging, Gayle and K.C. create the 

erfect balance in an unpredictable 

port.

Brooks has given a half-century of service to department

“The saddest thing I’ve experienced 

is going to structure 

fires and seeing a family 

have all their life become 

a pile of ash on the ground,” 

said Everett “Snuffy” Brooks. 

“I’ve seen that many times 

over the years.” 

This vision is what inspires 

Brooks to continue 

serving with the Chico Volunteer 

Fire Department. 

Brooks celebrated his 50th 

anniversary with the department 

Jan. 12 and said 

that firefighting is in his 

blood. 

“I just love it. It’s just 

something you get in your 

blood and you can’t get out,” 

he said. “It’s something you 

learn to love. It goes back 

to saving lives and saving 

property.” 

Brooks joined the department 

in 1960 at the age of 

20, almost two years after 

graduating from Chico High 

School. The Chico native 

worked for the fire chief and 

decided to enter his name 

on the volunteer firefighter 

aiting list. His name was 

alled 10 months after he 

pplied. 

“Being around people in 

he community, I developed 

n interest in helping othrs,” 

he said. “My No. 1 thing 

s I love people. If I can ever 

e of assistance to somebody, 

’ll be there.”

equipment, new firefighting 

techniques. It’s unbelievable 

how the ways change,” 

Brooks said. “Several of 

the members go to training 

schools, and then they show 

the other firefighters the 

techniques.” 

Brooks learned many important 

lessons while fighting 

a grass fire near Mount 

Street. 

“I learned not to try to be a 

hero and run out in front of 

the fire,” he said, chuckling. 

“Me and two other firemen 

got overtaken by fire, and

time. The fire hall was at 

the police department when 

Brooks began, then it moved 

to the square, finally settling 

at the current buildings just 

off the square on Weatherford 

Street. Brooks has had 

a hand in the construction of 

the new buildings, as well as 

helping maintain the equipment. 

In working together to 

save, the firefighters develop 

a family-like relationship. 

After particularly traumatic 

experiences, the firefighters 

gather to discuss their emotions. 

“The department has a 

policy to bring all your problems 

to the fire hall, and 

we’ll sit down and work 

through it all,” Brooks said. 


CONSTANTLY LEARNING — Brooks said firefighters must 

continue to train and learn throughout their career. Firefighting 

techniques have changed drastically since Brooks joined the 

department. 

“We have a good working relationship.”

a 50-mile, marathon (26.2

20. 

The event is more than a 

decade old. The Boudreauxes 

have directed the past two. 

Kevin has completed the 

50-mile event, which make 

loops on the cloverleaf Texas 

Arabian Distance Riders Association 

trails through a 

portion of the 20,250 acres 

of prairie in the Grasslands, 

multiple times. 

Last year was the largest 

event, drawing 

380 runners. Kevin 

is anticipating 

as many as 500 

for this year’s run. 

Many of the runners 

will be coming 

back from last 

year, but he said 

there will also be 

many first-time 

trail runners. 

“We use it as 

an introduction 

to trail running,” 

Boudreaux said. 

“It’s more laid back than road 

races. It’s less about time and 

more about the trail.” 

Most of the first-time trail 

runners will participate 

in the half-marathon. The 

race is actually 13.5 miles 

through the winding, sandy 

trails of the park. 

First-time trail runners 

quickly find out there is no 

concrete with painted arrows 

pointing the way. The trail is 

marked by painted horseshoes, 

ribbons and paint 

marks on trees. Runners are

Many of the veteran trail 

runners will take on the 

marathon and the grueling 

50-mile race, which will take 

nearly the entire day to complete. 

“The winner will do it in 

under eight hours,” Boudreaux 

said. “The average 

will be 11 hours.” 

The participants in the 50- 

mile event do face a cutoff to 

complete the race. They will 

have 10 hours, until 5 p.m., 

to complete the first three of 

the four loops on the course.

Advice on pruning plants

Note to readers: I continue 

to get multitudes of questions 

about how far back to prune 

a huge variety of plants that 

have been damaged by this 

winter’s cold. As in previous 

weeks, all anyone can tell you 

now is to wait until new spring 

growth is rampant in a couple 

of weeks before you assess the 

extent, if any, of actual plant 

dieback. 

However, if you can tell that 

part of a plant’s stem tissues 

are dried and brittle, or if 

they’re shriveled and browned, 

you can assume that part of 

the plant has been lost. 

There’s no way to be more 

specific, however. Just wait it 

out. Others around you are in 

the same predicament. 

Dear Neil: Last fall, I 

bought a batch of narcissus 

bulbs. I forgot to plant them, 

and even if they don’t bloom 

this year, I’d be willing to plant 

them now. Will they survive to 

bloom another year 

If the bulbs are still plump 

and full, they will probably 

try to establish. However, they 

may be dried and flakey when 

you pinch them. If so, they’re 

already gone. Your odds with 

them are not good. 

Dear Neil: I’ve attached 

photos of a couple of weeds

You’ll see the weeds’ 

leaves twist and contort 

as they wither 

away. Read and follow 

label directions 

carefully to avoid 

damage to desirable 

plants nearby. With waxyleafed 

plants, you’ll probably 

want to include one drop of a 

liquid dishwashing detergent 

to help hold the weedkiller in 

place on the leaves.

Dear Neil: I’ve attached a 

photo of my elephant ear plant 

in flower. I actually took it last 

summer, but I just found your 

column. Do these bloom often 

They have really unusual 

flowers. I can’t find out much 

about them. 

Look them up under their 

scientific name, Colocasia esculenta. 

These are actually 

first cousins to caladiums, and 

they’re also related to philodendrons, 

peace lilies, aglaonemas 

and dieffenbachias. 

All of these plants flower once 

or twice per year, and their 

blooms are complicated arrangements 

of floral and reproductive 

parts, often termed 

as “jack-in-the-pulpit” flowers. 

Having them bloom, while uncommon, 

is not unheard of. 

Dear Neil: Why would my 

orange tree not 

produce oranges 

It was a gift from 

my daughters three 

years ago, and the 

first year it had 

quite a few oranges. 

Since then, just 

nubbins that fell 

off. 

Assuming it’s 

healthy and that 

it’s been protected 

from the cold, the 

failure to set fruit 

might be due to a 

lack of pollination. Hopefully, 

you’ve had it outdoors at the 

time of its flowering, so that 

bees could reach the fragrant 

flowers. Move it outdoors on 

warm days during its blooming 

time. 

Dear Neil: How reliably 

do lantanas come back in the 

spring I had some bushy 

types, and I also had a bed 

of trailing ones. I don’t know 

whether to wait or to dig them 

up and start over. 

They vary a lot. Trailing 

lavender lantana and its 

white counterpart are the 

least winter-hardy, especially 

in a cold year like this one. 

Other trailers come next. The 

upright types usually tend to 

be the most durable, but even 

they will be late to reemerge 

in the spring. You could probably 

dig around one of the 

clumps to see if you find living 

roots. If so, be patient, and 

they’ll come back. Many of us,

however, consider them to be 

pretty much annuals. Their 

reemergence is too spotty, and 

we prefer the look of uniform 

beds. 

Dear Neil: I can see a knotty 

looking growth on a major 

limb of one of my oak trees. It 

looks like an arthritic knuckle, 

and it doesn’t appear that 

there has ever been a branch 

there. What causes that, and 

should I be worried

Oaks produce them, but the 

one you see most commonly

Pendleton Round-Up, the Confederated 

Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation 

converged around the rodeo grounds.

reappears on the horizon, thawed wildflower 

seeds frozen in time during a century-long 

ice age return to vibrant life. 

Members of the tribes engage in intricate 

dancing during the ceremony, dashing and 

dipping about like bright petals caught in a 

dust devil.

ANAPHYLAXIS 

Anaphylaxis is the most severe 

form of allergy, and it is a medical 

emergency. Anaphylaxis often 

begins with asthma-like symptoms 

that rapidly become life threatening. 

Among others, symptoms include 

hives and itching, itchy lips and throat, 

runny nose and coughing, weak 

pulse, fainting, and diarrhea. Common 

triggers are stinging insects and 

medicines. Fortunately, anaphylaxis 

is rare. Unfortunately, it can strike 

at any time, even without a history 

of severe reactions to allergens, so 

it’s important to keep high-risk kids 

protected. The first line of defense is 

education. Know the symptoms and 

what to do in an emergency. Be sure 

the child’s teachers are aware of the 

allergy risk as well. Always keep two 

doses of epinephrine with the child. 

Anaphylaxis is an immediate severe 

allergic reaction and can be lifethreatening.
